Czech Lucie Safarova has survived nine match points to defeat Yanina Wickmayer 3-6 7-6(7) 6-1.
“Yes, I heard it was nine,” Safarova said.
“But I was like, I’m just going to go for it and if she closes the match, well OK, but I’m just going to play my game. It’s exciting.”

After losing the opening set in the heat of Show Court 3, the world No.61 looked in all sorts of trouble down 0-40 on her serve at 5-6 in the second, but she somehow managed to regain the balance – after staring down the barrel of match point twice more – to force the tiebreaker.
Again, Wickmayer got the early jump, earning herself another three consecutive match points in the tiebreaker at 6-3, but once again she was unable to cross the finish line, allowing Safarova to eventually level the match, but not before squandering one last opportunity along the way.
