There was a mid-match blip - after storming out to a 6-3, 3-0 lead, Pavlyuchenkova watched on as Flipkens reeled off seven games in a row to take the second set, 6-3, and go up 1-0 in the third set. But the No.7-seeded Russian won six of the next seven games herself to prevail, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Pavlyuchenkova is now on a 14-match winning streak at indoor hardcourt events. She won her last two indoor hardcourt events at Paris and Moscow in 2014, going 5-0 at both, and is 4-0 so far here. If her record in WTA finals is anything to go by, she might just keep it going - she's 7-4 lifetime.
