Williams, who was coming off her biggest title in more than five years in Wuhan last week, looked in control early on, getting the first break of the match for a 4-3 lead and getting to game point for a 5-3 lead - but Ivanovic broke back, stayed with her and eventually snuck out the set in a tie-break.
The momentum shifted early in the second set - Williams jumped out to a 2-0 lead - but Ivanovic caught fire again, her huge forehand beginning to find the corners, and the No.6-seeded Serb won six games in a row to completely run away with it, 7-6(3), 6-2. She won the last seven points of the match.
At the end of the day Ivanovic was just too solid - she finished with a +10 differential of winners to unforced errors, 27 to 17. Williams, meanwhile, finished the day with a -6 differential (18 to 24).
