The Czech player won her first game at the 2014 Mutua Madrid Open as she overcame a difficult opponent in Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, and once her place in the second round was secured, the winner of the Caja Mágica tournament in 2011 took some time to meet fans and speak to the tournament website at the Marriott Hotels stand.
Petra Kvitova knows what it is to win the Mutua Madrid Open, having done so in 2011 against Victoria Azarenka. This year she is looking to repeat her achievement, and after winning a difficult opening encounter 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 against Sorana Cirstea, she seemed confident of recovering her performance level that saw her win at the Caja Mágica.
Congratulations on your win today in a very complicated match against Sorana Cirstea.
How did you find the encounter?
I played really well at the beginning on the clay court. The first set went really well and I played very aggressively, then she mounted a comeback and did very well. I started to make mistakes and wasn’t playing as aggressively as I could have. She made the most of her chances and I was lucky in the end that the tie-break went my way.
How are you finding your first few days here at the Mutua Madrid Open?
Well I have fond memories of the 2011 tournament of course, and now I’m trying to reacquaint myself with that form. The first matches are always about finding your feet so I’m just looking forward to the next one.
You were crowned champion here in 2011, do you think you can repeat that feat?
I hope so. Whenever I play I’m always looking to play my best tennis. I’m looking to improve every day, every week and in every tournament. That’s why I play.
What do you think about this tournament?
It’s great. It’s a really tough competition, where everyone is involved. From the very first day there are great matches, and as we saw today there were big names in action on all the courts.
And obviously this is one of the most important tournaments on the circuit so we’re all glad to be here.
