Ivanovic came into Madrid with plenty of confidence, having reached her first Premier-level final since Indian Wells in 2009 at her last tournament in Stuttgart. She also has two WTA titles to her credit this year, the first time she has captured multiple WTA titles since 2010. She had her best Madrid outing to date last year in making the semifinals. Keys, who was recently overtaken by Elina Svitolina as the WTA's top-ranked teenager, was looking for her fifth win over a Top 20 foe. Her best win came over No.5 Li Na in the first round here last year. The 11th-seeded Ivanovic cruised through the first set in just 22 minutes.
But Keys got her teeth into the match in a back-and-forth second set and appeared close to extending it to a third set when she took a 3-1 lead in the tie-break. However, Ivanovic reeled off five straight points to take control of the tie-break and closed out the 6-1, 7-6(4) triumph. Ivanovic converted on three of four break point opportunities compared to one of three for Keys. But the biggest statistical difference between the two was second serve points, with Ivanovic winning 15 of 25 and Keys just four of 18.
