On a day where three of the four women’s matches went three sets, it was the straight-setter that delivered the drama. It could have been the stage: Arthur Ashe Stadium at night. Or maybe the competitors: a pair of two-time Grand Slam champions in Garbiñe Mugurza and Petra Kvitova, the pre-tournament favorite versus the event’s feel-good story. And certainly the quality: Time and time again, Kvitova was excellent when she most needed to be, digging deep to score her best-ever US Open victory, unseating the No. 3 seed, 7-6, 6-3.
