Caroline Wozniacki had gotten the upper hand on longtime rival Dominika Cibulkova when the Slovak was forced to retire due to a right thigh injury, trailing the Dane, 3-6, 7-6(5), 3-1 in the Toray Pan Pacific Open quarterfinals.
Wozniacki became the first woman to win 50 matches in 2017 en route to the last eight, but appeared in trouble as she fell behind a set to Cibulkova, who had beaten her in their most recent encounter 18 months ago at the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy.
