In an all-Czech semifinal on Friday, Lucie Hradecka and Katerina Siniakova defeated Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova, 6-2, 7-5, to clinch a berth in the US Open women's doubles final.
The most memorable point in the first set came when the teams were tied, 2-all. Trailing 30-40, Strycova hit a drop shot past Hradecka, who ended up in a full splits on the court, but Hradecka/Siniakova won the next two points to break serve and take a 3-2 lead. Hradecka and Siniakova went on to win the next three games to clinch the set, 6-2.
Hradecka called for a medical time out during the changeover before the second set and emerged with her left thigh heavily taped.
In the second set, Strycova and Safarova pulled ahead 4-1 but couldn't hold on. Perhaps distracted by a dispute with the umpire, Strycova and Safarova lost focus and the next three games, with Hradecka and Sinikova evening the set at 4-4.
At 5-5 and trailing 0-30, Safarova served, and controversy erupted yet again. The point ended with Hradecka on the ground near the net. A replay seemed to show that Hradecka had been hit by her partner's ball before it cleared the net. But it wasn't called, and Hradecka and Siniakova suddenly had match point. Safarova and Strycova saved that point, but not the next, and ceded the set, 7-5, as well as the match.
Afterward, Hradecka said that playing their compatriots was "always a tough one" and for the final said, "We definitely have to stay calm, play our game, [play] aggressive... [and] trust our game."
