Monterrey hosted a WTA event for the first time in 2009 at the Sierra Madre Tennis Club.
While Marion Bartoli was the inaugural winner of what is now known as the Abierto Monterrey Afirme, 2010, 2011 and 2013 champion Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has been the tournament's dominant figure. In 2014, former World No.1 Ana Ivanovic was victorious.
The event attracted publicity during the 2012 staging when Serena Williams and Gisela Dulko delighted fans by rallying on an acrylic mini-tennis court that was floating on water at the Santa Lucía Riverwalk.
Monterrey is informally known as "the city of mountains" and is the capital city of México's northeastern state of Nuevo León. It is a base for many major international corporations and is México's second richest city.

Sloane Stephens and dominika cibulkova in abierto mexicano telcel 2016
Sloane Stephens booked her spot in the semifinals at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel with a win over Naomi Osaka, while Dominika Cibulkova came back from a set down to win against Johanna Larsson.
Galina Voskoboeva played her first WTA match in almost two years this week in Acapulco 2016
There are two sides to every comeback. Long layoffs may leave a player rusty and out of rhythm, but they have an undeniably refreshing quality that can sometimes lead to stretches of top-level tennis.
Out for over 22 months rehabbing multiple stress fractures and a bruised bone in her foot, former World No.42 Galina Voskoboeva makes her WTA return at this week's abierto mexicano telcel and in search of the form that made her last comeback so successful.
"This is my second comeback, so in the beginning it's very difficult, but I didn't expect it to be any other way," she told WTA Insider from an ITF Challenger in Surprise, Arizona.
"The most difficult part of this comeback is not having a ranking; I'm playing small tournaments because I'm at zero, but it's very difficult to even enter tournaments, and you're always stressed because you don't know if you'll get in or not."
Radwanska into semis of the qatar total open 2016
DOHA, Qatar - No.3 seed radwanska survived an onslaught from Italy's Vinci as the two put together a veritable highlight reel from start to finish in the quarterfinals of the qatar total open. It was the reigning WTA Finals champion, however, who ultimately emerged victorious, beating the No.9 seed, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
"She's a very tricky player with great hands, so you always expect tricky points from her," she said during her on-court interview. "I was just trying to be better this time, so I hope you guys enjoyed it and I think it was a great match."

Radwanska advances to 4 round in doha 2016
On a blustery afternoon, Radwanska had to withstand a spirited display from the World No.75, before eventually coming through, 6-4, 6-4.
As one of the game's elite, Radwanska has played much of her tennis down the years at the Khalifa Tennis and Squash Complex during the prime-time evening slot. It is an arrangement that has suited her well, the Pole reaching the semifinals on four occasions.
However, she began her latest title tilt in conditions not ideally suited to her eye-pleasing repertoire of strokes. "I think we all have to get used to different conditions. It was also windy. So it wasn't the easiest time to play and maybe it wasn't the prettiest match, but the most important thing is that I won and I'm very happy about that."

Sara Errani win's over strycova in dubai 2016
A former Top 10 fixture and french open finalist, Errani's greater big-match experience shone through as she romped to a 6-0, 6-2 victory after little more than an hour on court.
"I have no words. I'm sorry for Barbora - she's an amazing player, but I'm really happy to win this tournament. It's been a tough week for me, and I'm really happy for me, my team and my family and friends," Errani told Annabel Croft in her on-court interview.
The Italian looked in pensive mood when she stepped out on court, but hit the ground running. Perhaps sensing her opponent's own nerves, Errani won the toss and elected to receive, a decision that was rewarded by a string of unforced errors and a break to love.
With the occasion seemingly getting the better of her opponent, Errani showed no mercy, rattling through the next couple of games in the blink of an eye. When Strycova belatedly found her range, Errani was her equal, showcasing her extraordinary defensive capabilities to prevail in a 26-shot exchange and move 4-0 ahead.
After 29 one-sided minutes, Strycova surrendered the set after a couple more wild swings, and her mood darkened further when she frittered away a 30-0 lead to drop serve in the next game.
Much to the Czech's relief, she finally got on the scoreboard a few games, punching away a double-fisted volley to end the prospect of a first whitewash in a WTA final since 2014.
But whatever questions Strycova posed, Errani had an answer for, ploughing relentlessly towards the finishing line.

While the ATP first staged a tournament in Qatar in 1993, the Qatar Tennis Federation did not launch what is now known as the Qatar Total Open in Doha in 2001 as the popularity of women's sports was starting to take off in the country. Doha's ultra-modern Khalifa International Tennis Complex also hosted the season-ending WTA Championships from 2008 to 2010.
Qatar Total Open champions include WTA greats such as Justine Henin, Martina Hingis and Monica Seles, as well as two-time winners Victoria Azarenka, Anastasia Myskina and Maria Sharapova.
The capital of Qatar, Doha is the country's cultural, commercial and financial center.
Sara Errani into final of the dubai 2016
In a typically dogged display, Errani overturned deficits in both sets to prevail, 6-4, 6-4. The Italian, who lost to petra kvitova in the 2013 final, will meet either strycova or caroline Garcia on Saturday.
"It's tough today - it's hot and Elina hardly missed a ball at first - so I just tried to stay focused every point," Errani said in her on-court interview.
Both players had their moments in the opening set, but it was Errani who held her nerve when it mattered most, some resolute defending helping her to the decisive break in the ninth game.

Ana Ivanovic win's over halep in dubai 2016
In the previous round Ivanovic dropped a solitary game, and she was every bit as impressive against Halep, booking her place in the quarterfinals with a 7-6(2), 6-2 win.
"Honestly, I'm delighted," Ivanovic said. "It was a great battle in the first set, and she's such a great player and I really had to raise my game, which I think I did. It was not easy but I'm really thrilled to be through."
Heavy rain meant the players did not get on court until after 8pm. When they did finally emerge, another interruption was soon forthcoming, as the ball kids hastily tried to towel down the still-damp baseline.
On the resumption, Halep started brightest, opening up a 5-3 lead. However, with the set at her mercy she tightened, netting a couple of routine groundstrokes to surrender her advantage.
With her tail now up, Ivanovic produced some sparkling tennis to take the tie-break before racing through the second set.
"I was a little but anxious because it was stop and go. I think we both wanted to continue playing but it was a little bit slippery. I needed to stay calm and I'm glad I managed to do that," Ivanovic added when quizzed about the second interruption.
