Sugarpova in Moscow 2016. Fed cup

Maria Sharapova may not be playing in the opening singles of Russia’s Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group tie against the Netherlands, but the world No. 6 found time to give some local tennis youngsters a coaching clinic.

“I think it is one of those unique opportunities for kids to get a sense of tennis and get close to professional athletes and I think that is very inspiring,” She said.

“I think there is such a difference to being close to an athlete than watching them playing on a television screen. So I hope this is inspirational and I hope they had a really good time and I hope they can go home and become inspired to become an even better tennis player,” Sharapova added.

The Russian No. 1 wasn’t the only person from her team who was out giving the children something to remember. She was joined by captain Anastasia Myskina and 18-year-old Daria Kasatkina, who is making her Fed Cup debut.

The prospect of fighting it out for an Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro is all the motivation that Sharapova needs in 2016. However, she is also hoping to inspire a new generation of tennis stars, who may go on to win Olympic medals for Russia in future games.

“I think this is something important and the kids are our future and the more time we can give them and the more devotion to the little things is really key,” the 28-year-old mentioned.
