SHARAPOVA INTO 2 ROUND OF THE WIMBLEDON 2015. KONTA OUT

Johanna Konta came to Centre Court on Monday hoping that her rich run of recent form might allow her to catch Maria Sharapova cold. But the steely Russian brought her best game to the first round encounter, defeating the British No 2 6-2 6-2 in an hour and 22 minutes
Sharapova had not played since losing in the fourth round of the French Open, while Konta has reeled off seven victories over world top 100 players since the grass court season started.

SERENA WILLIAMS ADVACES TO 2 ROUND OF THE CHAMPIOSHIPS WIMBLEDON 2015,

Serena Williams overcame an inspired start from Russian qualifier Margarita Gasparyan to move through her first round match at Wimbledon in straight sets on Monday, 6-4, 6-1. With a gorgeous one-handed backhand and some ferocious down-the-line forehands, Gasparyan, who had never won a WTA-level match, gave Williams a very tough start - she jumped out to a 3-1 lead and even had a break point for 4-1 - but the World No.113 missed that opportunity with a missed forehand. And from there it was all Williams. The No.1-seeded five-time Wimbledon champion won 11 of the next 13 games to run away with it in straight sets, finishing it off with an emphatic overhead into the stands.

"She played really well," Williams said.
"She also had a few matches under her belt from the qualifying, so she was ready for the grass. She got off to a really fast start. She was playing really well today. "I would be lying if I said I wanted a hard match, of course, but I think it's good for me. At the end of the day, it's definitely good for me. But no one really wants to be in any sort of difficult match!"

ANA IVANOVIC INTO 2 ROUND OF THE CHAMPIOSHIPS WIMBLEDON 2015

Ana Ivanovic required little over an hour to brush aside qualifier Xu Yi-Fan, 6-1, 6-1, and take her place in the second round of Wimbledon. While her preparations for the tournament were dealt a setback when she fell early in Birmingham, Ivanovic hit the ground running at the All-England Club, rattling through the first set in 25 one-sided minutes. World No.176 Xu was playing her first match in the main draw of a Grand Slam and she struggled to come to terms with the Serb's relentless baseline attack. The forehand proved particularly potent, a dipping passing shot from this wing giving her an early break in the second set.

"I really feel that the early loss in Birmingham gave me time to work on some things," Ivanovic said. "Before Birmingham I hadn't had much time on grass but now coming into this week I feel like I'm beginning to implement some of those things we worked on, and that makes me happy."

BELINDA BENCIC CONQUERS THE EASTBOURNE 2015

After spending an hour and 49 minutes splitting the first two sets, the first going to Bencic, 6-4, and the second going to Radwanska, 6-4, Bencic completely pulled away in the third set, needing just 24 minutes to take it at love for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 victory and the first WTA title of her blossoming career.

At 18 years and 109 days, Bencic is the youngest player to win a Premier-level title since New Haven back in 2008, where Caroline Wozniacki - 18 years and 43 days at the time - won her first Premier title. "The match started very well for me, actually.
I was very focused and I really played very freely," Bencic said afterwards. "Of course I was disappointed I didn't close out the second set, and I was also starting to get a little tired - it was a lot of running out there, and we had some long rallies out there too.

Wimbledon, also known as The Championships, is considered by many the world's most prestigious tournament. Launched in 1877, the event is held in late June and early July at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London and is the only major still played on grass - the game's original surface. Other traditions include no matches on the middle Sunday, a strict player dress code, the eating of strawberries and cream, the absence of sponsor advertising around the courts and royal patronage. Since 2001, Wimbledon's courts have been sown with 100% perennial ryegrass.
The main show courts, Centre Court and Court 1, are normally used just during The Championships' fortnight, and the remaining 17 courts are used regularly for other events hosted by the club. To the delight of players, fans and media, a retractable roof was installed prior to the 2009 staging. The show courts were competed on an additional time in 2012, as the facility hosted the Summer Olympics tennis event three weeks after Wimbledon. In another break from tradition, starting in 2015, The Championships will begin a week later on the calendar, allowing for three weeks instead of two between the end of the French Open and the start of Wimbledon. WTA legend Martina Navratilova has the ladies tournament record with nine singles titles.
She also has the Open Era record with seven doubles titles. On top of that, she has four mixed doubles crowns, giving her a remarkable 20 Wimbledon triumphs altogether. Others who have dominated the event in the Open Era include Steffi Graf with seven singles titles and Serena and Venus Williams, with five each.

Mandy Minella knocks out top seed Lourdes Dominguez Lino in Qualifying. Wimbledon 2015

You’re never going to have a host of compatriots to ask for grass-court advice when you’re a player from little Luxembourg. For Mandy Minella, there is only one other travelling the circuit - and it’s a good thing he is quite handy with the green turf under foot.
Through to the final round of qualifying after stunning top seed Lourdes Dominguez Lino on Wednesday, the world No.205 admitted she had picked countryman Gilles Muller’s mind following his resurgence in the past 12 months.

“Yeah I’ve asked him many tips, you know,” she laughed. “All the time, saying ‘hey guy, how do you play that well on grass?’
“Yeah he’s trying to help me a lot and I’m happy that I’ve already got my first win (before today). I guess that gave me a bit of confidence, so I hope I can finish it now.
” Minella, who rose as high as world No.66 nearly two and a half years ago, hopes her momentum in the qualifying draw may also be a sign of things to come in her year ahead. “I would like to. I think I can still do it,” the 29-year-old said.
“That’s why I still play because I’m not the youngest anymore so I want to give myself this chance to go back and see how far I can go.
” The Luxembourger had only lost to the Spanish world No.90 as recently as April at an ITF event in Colombia and was all too aware of her poor record against the 5ft4in baseliner, whose heavily top-spun shots off the ground are better suited to the higher-bouncing red clay.

News Wimbledon 2015: Entry Lists Women's Singles

Dominika Cibulkova made a winning return to action at the Aegon International Eastbourne 2015

Cibulkova struggled a bit on her serve, getting broken three times, but her return was on fire as she broke seven times to beat the 18-year-old, No.358-ranked Dart in an hour and 19 minutes, 6-1, 6-3.

"I didn't even feel like I didn't play for four months.
I felt like I just played two weeks ago at Roland Garros and now I'm here," Cibulkova said.
"The first set was great, I felt so good and so strong. The second set was a bit complicated - all three games I lost, I had break points or game points. But that's normal.
If someone told me before the tournament I'd win my first match, I'd take it, no matter what. "And my foot felt very good. Even right now there's no pain, so
I'm obviously really happy."

The story of the Aegon International at Devonshire Park in Eastbourne could not be told without Martina Navratilova. She captured the tournament an astonishing 11 times, the second-most times any player has won a WTA event behind Navratilova's 12 titles in Chicago. She also was victorious in the Eastbourne doubles six times with Pam Shriver. Other all-time greats who took the title here include Tracy Austin, Kim Clijsters, Lindsay Davenport, Chris Evert, Justine Henin, Monica Seles and Virginia Wade. Devonshire Park is Eastbourne's oldest park and has hosted lawn tennis since the 1870s. It has been used as a local tennis facility, venue for a number of Davis Cup ties and facility for the AEGON International since the event's inception in 1974.
Situated in the heart of Eastbourne among trees and gardens, the park is only minutes away from the town center and seafront, making it an ideal summer setting for the event. For many players, it serves as the final tune-up for Wimbledon, which gets underway the following week and is about a two-hour drive away.

Caroline Wozniacki and Eugenie Bouchard of the Aegon International Eastbourne 2015

Caroline Wozniacki and Eugenie Bouchard helped kick off the Aegon International Eastbourne with an iconic photo shoot on Sunday, posing in front of the famous white cliffs of Eastbourne with the English Channel in the background on Day 1 of the Premier-level event.
Wozniacki is a former champion in Eastbourne, winning the title in 2009, while Bouchard is making her main draw debut in the south coastal city this year. Check out more pics from the photo shoot below.

ANGELIQUE KERBER CONQUERS OF THE AEGON CLASSIC 2015

Pliskova had Kerber in trouble time and time again in the match. After saving four set points in her 3-5 service game she ended up taking the first set in a tie-break, and she went up a break early in the second set too.

And even though Kerber stormed back to take the second set, 6-3, and go up 5-3 in the third, Pliskova took control again, winning three games in a row to inch ahead 6-5 in the decider. But the No.4-seeded Kerber had one last fight left in her, unleashing an ace to hold serve and push the match to a third set tie-break, and then winning three points in a row from 4-all in that breaker to close the No.6-seeded Pliskova out after two hours and 16 minutes on center court, 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-6(4).

Pliskova had bigger numbers in the match, but Kerber was just too sharp - the Czech had 51 winners to 42 unforced errors (a +9 differential) while the German had 34 winners to 14 unforced errors (+20).
"Angie was playing great. I did everything I could so I'm not really disappointed," Pliskova said. "We all saw what she can do on grass - I felt like she was just everywhere, because she moves so well on grass, and it's always tough to play a lefty on grass. Her flat shots are tough to play against as well."
