The No.7-seeded Mattek-Sands and Safarova came from a set down and survived a tight second set to edge No.12-seeded Casey Dellacqua and Yaroslava Shvedova in Sunday's final, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
And so Mattek-Sands and Safarova are now halfway to a Calendar Year Doubles Grand Slam, having already won the Australian Open, a remarkable feat given it was their first tournament together.
Only one team has won the Calendar Year Doubles Grand Slam in the Open Era - Martina Navratilova and Pam Shriver in 1984. Mattek-Sands and Safarova are halfway to becoming the second to do it. "I'm sure everyone is talking about that!" Mattek-Sands said. "But no, I just want to drink champagne out of this trophy, then we will work our way to the next one. Actually I want to go home before I think about playing tennis anymore! But seriously, we're taking it one match at a time. That's the only way."
