Now the experienced veteran, Maria Sharapova will face 20-year-old Garbine Muguruza, conqueror of defending champion Serena Williams, for a spot in the French Open semi-final. In a fourth-round battle against wily 30-year-old Samantha Stosur, Maria Sharapova found herself down a set and a break.
That’s when she conjured up her killer instinct and rattled off nine straight games to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 and book a spot in the quarters. “I'm a big competitor and I don't want to give anyone a chance,” she said of her awe-inspiring comeback. “I was never here from day one to make friendships. This is a battlefield for me, and I want to win. I try to grind it out, whatever it takes. Sometimes it's not very pretty, but at the end of the day, if I get the job done, I'm happy.” Battle-ready Sharapova will take on the ebullient Garbine Muguruza. The Spaniard has proved that her second-round upset over world No.1 Serena Williams was no fluke by dropping no more than four games in a set in her two subsequent matches. On Sunday night, she silenced the fans that had gathered to cheer on wildcard Pauline Parmentier to another upset. Despite being nervous, Muguruza was able to ignore the partisan crowd and secure a 6-4, 6-2 win. World No.145 Parmentier is no Sharapova, but Muguruza will approach the match the same way. “I have nothing to lose and everything to gain, so I’ll try to enjoy it as much as I can,” she says. “I’m going to rise to the challenge. I'll walk onto court with the mindset that will allow me to win, as I always do for all my matches.” Two confident women, one spot in the semi-finals.
