Angelique Kerber was in emphatic form as she downed Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets, 63 76(5). The German picked up where she left off from the first day’s action, having seen off Daniela Hantuchova 76(9) 61 in the second rubber of the tie. Cibulkova, for her part, was unable to respond positively to her three-set defeat to Andrea Petkovic, where she held a match point in a second set tie-break before Petkovic’s stunning comeback, in yesterday’s opening rubber.
Kerber’s win gave Germany its first World Group victory since 2002, when current captain, Barbara Rittner, won three points in a 3-2 win over Russia. The last time Germany competed in a semifinal was 1995. The Germans will face Australia for a place in this year’s final.
