PATTAYA, Thailand, Feb. 2

Ekaterina Makarova defeated Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) Sunday in the championship match of the WTA's PTT Pattaya Open in Thailand. It was the second WTA title for Makarova but first since she won the AEGON International in June 2010. Pliskova, who won the Malaysian Open last March, fell to 1-1 in WTA finals. Makarova, seeded fourth in the tournament, won 75 percent of the points on serve Sunday and fought off five break points. She had the only break of the match to claim the first set and used her solid serving to get in position to take the second in the tiebreaker. Pliskova also served well Sunday, pounding out 10 aces against one double fault and winning two-thirds of the points when serving. She allowed Makarova only three break chances, all in the first set.
Makarova collected $43,000 along with the title, boosting her career winnings to about $4.7 million. Pliskova, who advanced through the tournament as an unseeded player, took home $21,400, increasing her career total to $600,000.
