Five years removed from her last major final (right here in New York) former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki booked her ticket to that stage again, as Peng Shuai was forced to retire due to cramping in the second set.
It was a bizarre and disappointing end to a battle that had been high-octane and even-matched from the start. Leading by a set and a break, Wozniacki was serving 30-40 at 4-3 in the second, when Peng began cramping. After a near 10-minute break, Peng returned to court for several points but was not able to finish the match, collapsing at the baseline and conceding the match.
The physical maladies were brought on by countless 20-plus stroke rallies and a hot and humid day in New York. Players have fought through tough weather conditions throughout the tournament.
Wozniacki will face the winner of Serena Williams and Ekaterina Makarova in the day’s second semifinal.
