The latter created a surprise and won in two sets of 7-6(4) and 6-1. The following match featured the Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski (no. 207) and qualifier Olga Savchuk (no. 225) from Ukraine.
Savchuk had the upper hand and defeated the Canadian in two sets of 6-3 and 7-5. Another qualifier will be moving on to the second round and that is Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova (no. 237), who easily eliminated the American Sachia Vickery (no.144) 6-2, 6-4. Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic (no. 121) will also play in the second round thanks to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Veronica Cepede Royg (no. 133) from Paraguay. Meanwhile on the Bell court, France’s Alizé Lim (no. 197) faced the American Melanie Oudin (no. 134) but fell in three sets of 5-7, 6-3 and 6-3.
The following match featuring France’s Kristina Mladenovic (no. 73) and Naomi Broady (no. 147) from the United Kingdom ended with a final score of 6-4, 7-5 in favour of third seed Mladenovic. The last contest of the afternoon session between Hungary’s Timea Babos (no. 114 and seed no. 8) and Switzerland’s Romina Oprandi required a third set to determine the winner. The Hungarian will be the one continuing on to the next round after a 6-1; 3-6 and 6-4 win. First seed Venus Williams (no. 20) made her entrance on the Banque Nationale central court for the first match of the evening session. She faced Canada’s Françoise Abanda, only 17-year old (no. 205) which offered great opposition to her childhood idol before falling 7-5, 6-3. The last contest featured second seed Ajla Tomljanovic (no. 55), from Croatia and the American Irina Falconi (no. 150). Tomljanovic only needed an hour and four minutes to get rid of Falconi 6-4, 6-1. Only one doubles match was presented today and the all-American duo formed of Louisa Chirico and Sanaz Marand faced Germany’s Julia Goerges and Czech Republic’s Andrea Hlavackova, second seeds of the doubles main draw. The latter won in two sets of 6-2 and 6-4.
