Injury has restricted Azarenka's clay court campaign to just a handful of matches and Begu took advantage of her rustiness to run out a 6-3, 6-2 winner.
Begu had never beaten Azarenka in five previous meetings, including 12 months ago in Rome, and was understandably pleased to have broken her duck. "It was a really nice match. I served really well and I played my best at the important moments, so I'm really happy with the win and looking forward to the next one," Begu said.
