Yanina Wickmayer was struggling throughout with a lower leg injury. "I knew in advance it was going to be difficult", said Wickmayer after losing 6-2 and 6-2 to Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.
"I've hardly been able to train and never managed to get into my rhythm." Wickmayer kept up appearances at the start but after being level until 2-2 she lost six games in a row.
She was able to pull two games back in set two but then found herself powerless to stop her opponent from taking a comfortable victory. In the second round the 28-year-old Czech is up against France's Alizé Cornet, seventh seed in Antwerp.
