TORONTO, Canada
Eugenie Bouchard was already the WTA's Newcomer Of The Year in 2013, and now she's on the cover of the Newsmakers Of The Year edition of one of Canada's top news mags.
A weekly news magazine that reports on Canadian issues such as politics, pop culture and current events, Maclean's included Bouchard the new cover alongside fellow Canadian newsmakers Rob Ford, Justin Bieber and Justin Trudeau, as well as world personalities like Miley Cyrus and Michelle Obama. In the cover story, the magazine writes about the fast-rising Canadian star: One short year ago, Montréal tennis player Eugenie Bouchard (who goes by "Genie") was a relative unknown. Now, the 19-year-old is capping off 2013 as one of the most-watched stars in her sport - and Canada's newest tennis darling.
Bouchard bested Ana Ivanovic, a Serbian player ranked 16th in the world, at Wimbledon in July. The match was played on centre court, in front of Carole and Michael Middleton. "You can't play on a bigger stage than that in tennis," she said. She may find herself doing some encores.
