The Apia International Sydney is one of the oldest tournaments in the world, dating back to 1885. The Sydney Cricket Ground was the first venue for what was then called the New South Wales Open, followed by Double Bay and then White City, which hosted the event for 76 years through 1999. In 2000, the event moved to the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre, which also hosted the Olympic tennis event that year, and where the combined ATP/WTA event continues to be held the week before the Australian Open.
In 2012, Victoria Azarenka became the first player in eight years to win Sydney and then go on to victory in Melbourne. At the 2013 staging, Agnieszka Radwanska recorded the first double bagel in a WTA final in over six years.
Other champions include Jennifer Capriati, Kim Clijsters, Lindsay Davenport, Chris Evert, Justine Henin, Martina Hingis, Amélie Mauresmo, Gabriela Sabatini, Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario and Monica Seles. Evonne Goolagong and Martina Navratilova share the Open Era event record with four titles each.
The state capital of New South Wales, the most populous city in Australia and the country's economic center, Sydney is situated on Australia's southeast coast off the Tasman Sea.
