Those who prefer to stay in Europe for a few more weeks after Wimbledon before taking part in the US summer hardcourt swing can participate in the XXVI Italiacom Open in Palermo. Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues has the tournament record with five titles, including three straight from 2004 to 2006. Other notable champs are Dinara Safina, Anastasia Myskina and Mary Pierce, who won the first of her 18 career titles here as a 16-year-old in 1991 - the second year of the event's existence. The tournament is staged at the Country Time Club 7 km from the city center. Located in northwest Sicily in southern Italy, Palermo is noted for its history, culture, architecture and cuisine.
