USA are heading to the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals 2020 in Budapest after denying a resurgent Latvia side’s bid to become just the eighth team to win a tie from 2-0 down with victory in the decisive doubles.
After beating Jelena Ostapenko and Anastasija Sevastova in the opening two matches of their Fed Cup Qualifiers tie on Friday night, Serena Williams and Sofia Kenin lost the reverse fixtures on Saturday – Williams seeing her 14-match unbeaten Fed Cup singles streak ended.
But USA came back to win the final match, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Kenin beating Ostapenko and Sevastova 6-4 6-0 to seal a 3-2 victory in Everett, Washington.
