Things went from bad to worse for the Canadians when Biel-based Jil Teichmann marked a special Fed Cup singles debut by beating Canadian stand-in No. 1 Leylah Annie Fernandez 7-6(4) 6-4 in the first singles before world No. 5 Belinda Bencic outclassed Bouchard’s stand-in - the doubles specialist Gaby Dabrowski - 6-1 6-2 in under an hour.
With the host nation needing just one more win to secure their route to the new-look Fed Cup Finals in Budapest in April, the visitors have a Swiss mountain to climb on Saturday.
