Anna Karolina Schmiedlova made it a weekend of personal and national achievement in Bratislava’s AXA Arena, safely guiding Slovakia into the inaugural Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals in April.
After Heather Watson kept British hopes alive on day two by seeing off Rebecca Sramkova 6-0 7-5, the visitors needed another display of outstanding temperament and focus from Harriet Dart to take the tie into the doubles decider.
But while Dart once again drained her locker of every competitive resource, just as she had against Viktoria Kuzmova on day one, Schmiedlova was indefatigably comfortable on her old friend the clay. Her 7-5 6-3 victory in an hour and 42 minutes propelled Slovakia to Budapest, while Great Britain face an April tie in the Play-offs to retain their berth in the Qualifiers this time next year.
