Timea Babos and Lucie Safarova have won their first Apia International Sydney doubles title in their first tournament together, toughing out a three-set victory over top seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci. The newly formed team emerged triumphant after a topsy-turvy battle that ended in a 7-5 3-6 [10-7] scoreline. The opening stanza was a tight affair with little separating the two teams until the Italians were broken late in the set. Despite the match being the pair’s first final together, Babos and Safarova showed no signs of nerves, cleanly striking the ball to take the first set 7-5. The contrast in style was evident from the first ball struck with Babos and Safarova seeking to crush balls from the baseline and finish the points early.
On the other side of the net, the Italian pair carefully constructed points with slices, lobs and strong returns. This form of play proved to be effective for the world No.1 team as they gained an early break in the second to claim the set and force the contest into a match tiebreak. With the momentum in their favour, the Italians looked destined for victory; however, the controlled aggression displayed by the more inexperienced team in tandem with unexpected errors from the Italian pairing led Babos and Safarova to a surprising yet well-deserved victory.
