Kristina Mladenovic and Pauline Parmentier put France in the driving seat in its Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group play-off tie with Spain after both recorded straight sets victories on Saturday.
Mladenovic defeated Silvia Soler-Espinosa 61 60 before Parmentier beat Sara Sorribes Tormo 64 62, in a match where the score belied the challenge faced by the Frenchwoman.
In the opening rubber, Mladenovic needed just 50 minutes to put her team 1-0 up in Roanne after a clinical performance against a player ranked some 137 places beneath her.
She hit 25 winners to her opponent's three and looked dominant throughout. Soler-Espinosa could not get on the board until the 12th game, and her fightback, such as it was, was short-lived - Mladenovic closed out the contest a game later.
