Trailing an inspired Cibulkova 5-2 in the final set, Radwanska looked dead and buried. However, the No.3 seed dragged herself back from the brink, saving a match point en route to a memorable 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory.

In an early contender for match of the tournament, a packed Stadium 3 was treated to an absorbing clash of styles. Early on, it appeared that Radwanska's cerebral game would prove too much for Cibulkova, a masterly display in the art of counterpunching earning the first set's decisive break.

Unperturbed by this setback, Cibulkova continued to wail away from the baseline and as the contest wore on her assault began to take its toll. With belief now coursing through her veins, she ran away with the second set before surging ahead in the decider.
