The No.1-seeded Wickmayer came storming out of the gates, reeling off five games in a row to surge ahead, 5-0. Gibbs, the No.5 seed, sunk her teeth into the match from there - she won three of the next four games to drop a tight first set, 6-3, then won four of the next five to go up 4-1 in the second.
But Wickmayer has been ranked as high as No.12 in the world for a reason and she lifted her game when she needed it most, breaking back and eventually sneaking past the finish line, 6-3, 7-6(4).
It's been a strong fall for the Belgian - she recently won her fourth WTA title at the International-level Japan Women's Open Tennis in Tokyo, and now the WTA 125K Series-level Carlsbad Classic.
Agnieszka Radwanska and Urszula Radwanska kept a charitable tradition going this past week, taking part in Szlachetna Paczka - or Noble Box - for the seventh year in a row.
Every year through the Noble Box project, volunteers go door to door throughout the year compiling a database of families in need, asking them what would help ease the pressures of the holidays. Then, for a three week period in November and December, donors are given a list to take with them to the supermarket, where they fill a shopping cart with the food, clothing and more to donate to them.
This year the Radwanska sisters helped a 64-year-old grandmother caring for an orphaned boy whose biggest passion is sport. So who better to help out than two of the biggest names in Polish sports?
"I'm so happy that I'm in Poland now and could help again - I hope all of these presents will help them look into the future with hope and joy," Agnieszka said.
"I can't imagine Christmas without the breaking of the wafer, presents, and the Noble Box, which has become part of our Christmas tradition."

Maria Sharapova: It was a nice peaceful morning until I forgot we had an agenda...
Wozniacki, who has beaten Williams before in WTA-level competition - at Miami in 2012 - conjured up that magic again, her rock solid baseline game helping her to a 6-3, 6-4 win at the exhibition.
"It was such a great thing to play in front of my home crowd here in Herning, and at the same time to play against a great champion and a good friend," Wozniacki said afterwards.
"I hope very much to be able to play in Denmark again in the future. It's been a great pleasure to come and play here."
"It's been so nice to see Caroline's home country again," Williams, who played Ana Ivanovic at the exhibition event last year, said.
"I've enjoyed my stay and the nice, friendly Danish people I got to meet.
"And playing in front of the Danish tennis fans again was nice, even though I didn't win!"

Serena Williams and singer Solange Knowles attend Louis XIII Celebration of "100 Years" The Movie You Will Never See, starring John Malkovich at a private residence on November 18, 2015 in Beverly Hills, California.
Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki met the Danish press on Wednesday ahead of their exhibition clash - the Energi Denmark Champions Battle - which is set for Thursday.
"I've been looking forward to this day for a long time," Wozniacki said. "It's been three years since I played my last match in Denmark, and playing my good friend Serena here is a dream come true."
Williams played the Energi Denmark Champions Battle last year too, against another former No.1.
"I've been looking forward to visiting Herning again," Williams commented. "I had such a great time playing here last year, so when I had the chance to come here with Caroline I said yes right away."
The two have been BFFs on the tour for years - and the relationship could keep going for years.
"We've been joking that I'll follow Caroline around the tour when I finish playing myself," Williams said at Wednesday's press conference, smiling. "Being in the box, maybe even coaching Caroline!"
On Thursday they'll play for a Shamballa bracelet worth 100,000 Danish krones (just over $14,000).

The world remains a deeply unfair place for too many children and it's time to do something about it. Today is Universal Children’s Day and the start of a global movement to #FightUnfair. Violence is not inevitable.
The cycle can and must be broken. Let’s give every child a fair chance to grow up safely. Join me and UNICEF to #FightUnfair.

For tennis fans, the WTA's week in Madrid is a time to handicap the field as it heads into the French Open. For WTA Rising Star Donna Vekic, the Mutua Madrid Open is an extra special spot on her schedule, as it puts her just 20 minutes from the home of Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, her favorite football team.
"It's really lucky that we have a tournament in Madrid, so whenever I'm there I always try to go if I'm not playing," Vekic told WTA Insider.
"My whole family has been fans since Davor Suker played for Real Madrid. There's a picture of me as a three year old in his kit!"
Growing up watching Real Madrid matches, the talented teenager attended her first in the Spanish capital only a few years ago, but enjoyed the added bonus of getting to tour their home arena, the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.
"Their facilities are really good and it was nice to see it from the inside. I guess we can say it's a little bit bigger than most tennis stadiums!"
