Maria Sharapova in 2019 Shenzhen open. The best moments

SHENZHEN, China
Maria Sharapova is thrilled with the prospect of returning to competitive tennis at the Shenzhen Open but admits she is unlikely to be at her best.

The WTA World No.29 was forced to cut her 2018 campaign short in September in order to recover from a shoulder complaint but is fit again ahead of the new season.

She begins 2019 in China, where she reached the semifinals 12 months ago, but while she is aiming for even more this time around, she accepts that after a layoff it could take her some matches to find her rhythm.

“I’m really excited to be back and competing in a tournament,” she said prior to the competition, which begins on December 30.

Brisbane international 2019. Main draw singles. Women's Qualifying singles

Amanda Anisimova has been given a wildcard to the Asb Classic 2018

17-year-old rising star Amanda Anisimova has been given a wildcard to the ASB Classic. The young American is one of the most promising teenagers finishing the season as the youngest player inside the top 100.

In her first year on the professional tour, the teen sensation, then 16,  shocked two-time Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova to reach the round of sixteen at Indian Wells – the biggest event on the WTA Tour.

She backed that up with a strong run through to the round of 16 in Cincinnati before a stunning week in Hiroshima, Japan, where she won seven matches, including beating the top seed and seventh seed on her way to the her first WTA final, the youngest player to do so since 2012.

Serena Williams was voted the Associated Press’ Female Athlete of the Year.

Serena Williams reached back-to-back Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the US Open this year, but it was her resilience in the face of adversity that has earned her the title of the Associated Press’ Female Athlete of the Year.

“Her rapid return to tennis after a health scare following childbirth was a victory in itself, and for that, Williams was voted The Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year for the fifth time,” said AP Sports Writer Brian Mahoney.

In one week, the then-16-year-old American scored her first WTA main draw win, her first Top 20 victory, and her first Top 10 upset en route to the Round of 16 of the BNP Paribas Open, announcing herself to an enthusiastic tennis audience and kicking off a string of strong results from a 2001 generation that also includes Moscow River Cup champion Olga Danilovic.

“It’s definitely motivating,” the American admitted. “You know, it’s great that all of these young players are getting so much better, and there are a lot of new players on the rise. Definitely when I see other players my age doing well, it motivates me, and tells me that I can be just as good as they can.”

Aleksandra wozniak announced her retirement effective immediately on Wednesday

Aleksandra Wozniak announced her retirement effective immediately on Wednesday.

“The past few years have been challenging with all of the injuries, but I always continued to fight because I was still passionate about my sport,” she said. “Today, I love tennis just as much, but due to my injuries, my body is no longer able to perform at 100%. It is time for me to turn the page."

Wozniak scored her career-high ranking just under a year after her first WTA title, earned at the former Bank of the West Classic (Stanford) in 2008. The Canadian knocked out Francesca Schiavone, Serena Williams (via retirement) and future Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli in the final.

Steve Simon provides more details behind the tour's new rules regarding maternity leave, special seeding, and the evolution of the tour's attire rules.

WTA Insider: Let’s start with the process. What is the process behind making changes to the rulebook?

Simon: It's an exhaustive process to say the least, even for the most simple rule changes. Proposals or changes to the rules come from a variety of origins. In our player meetings they will bring up issues and we will look at them as they apply to the rules. The tournament meetings have their take on things. And clearly our staff members who implement the rules and monitor and manage the rules, always come up with things where they're finding issues with the rules as we go forward.

Once that rule is brought forth, it goes to the rules committee, which is made up of player and tournament representation. It's a subcommittee of our board and staff and they will review the request and the current rules in the book and come up with potential language that would address the issue that was brought up.

If the rules committee feels that rule and the language is something appropriate for consideration, it then has the player council and tournament council review it and provide their respective feedback. Where appropriate we'll also get constituency feedback, meaning individual players and/or tournaments and/or outside parties that are appropriate. Then we'll bring that feedback back to the rules committee to consider, and it will come to an agreement as to whether it wishes to recommend the rule for approval to the board or not.

Radwanska was the most creative player of her generation. Martina Navratilova. ❤️馃憣

Agnieszka Radwanska was a contradiction - she was the most imaginative and creative player of her generation, and yet so risk-averse that she had a really hard time trying anything new on the practice court.

Tennis fans will remember Radwanska for playing shots that others wouldn't have even thought of - sometimes on purpose and sometimes when reacting to an unusual situation. In an era of bam-bam tennis, Radwanska created so much with her head and her hands, playing tennis on the fly, and just letting it happen. What people might not have realised was that Radwanska - who has announced her retirement - was not one to venture out of her comfort zone.
