Amanda Anisimova has been given a wildcard to the Asb Classic 2018

17-year-old rising star Amanda Anisimova has been given a wildcard to the ASB Classic. The young American is one of the most promising teenagers finishing the season as the youngest player inside the top 100.

In her first year on the professional tour, the teen sensation, then 16,  shocked two-time Wimbledon Champion Petra Kvitova to reach the round of sixteen at Indian Wells – the biggest event on the WTA Tour. 

She backed that up with a strong run through to the round of 16 in Cincinnati before a stunning week in Hiroshima, Japan, where she won seven matches, including beating the top seed and seventh seed on her way to the her first WTA final, the youngest player to do so since 2012.

Julia Goerges kept on winning in Auckland, serving out a third straight title with a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over former WTA World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki, earning her the ASB Classic trophy.

"It feels amazing, I must say," Goerges said after the match ."It's not just about winning here, but the consistency I've had for the last few weeks and months. That makes me prouder, and I'm just enjoying every moment of it."

ASB Classic announces first class off-court experience for 2018 Tournament

The 2018 ASB Classic is set to be one of the most sought-after destinations this summer, with its lifestyle events rivalling its stellar player line-up. The tournament has teamed up with some of the best names in food, fashion and entertainment to create a touch of Classic come January. 

Off the back of the star-studded 2017 player field, the 2018 ASB Classic returns with an impressive player line-up including glamour girl Caroline Wozniacki, and previous Men’s Champions Jack Sock, Grand Slam Champion Victoria Azarenka and former champion’s John Isner and Roberto Bautista Agut. 

In addition to the established stars, the ASB Classic has secured tennis wonderkid Denis Shapovalov, tipped by many to be the next Roger Federer as part of a quartet of future stars who are set for the games elite. Andrey Rublev, Karen Khachanov and eventual champion Hyeun Chung all competed at the ATP Next Gen Finals in Milan this month as the best players aged 21 and under on tour. They are set for bright futures with Auckland shaping up as a launching pad for 2018.

Julia goerges  won her second straight match over former caroline wozniacki,  avenging a 2015 loss to the Dane at the Asb Classic, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, to complete the line-up of semifinalists in Auckland.

Wozniacki powered through to the quarterfinals of the International-level tournament with a ruthless 6-0, 6-2 victory against Mc Hale.

"It was a better start than yesterday," Wozniacki said, having dug out of an early 4-0 hole in her first round match on Tuesday.
"I got a little nervous in the end. It was going a little too well - I know she's a good player, and I've had trouble against her in the past, and I blew a few match points at 5-0 and 5-1.
But I just kept focusing on every point and I'm glad that I was able to finish it off in the end."

The formation of what now is known as the ASB Classic occurred when Ari Hallenberg and Global Sports saw a hole in the marketplace and asked Tennis New Zealand about creating an event in Auckland. The first staging was held in 1985 as part of the 1986 tour and it moved to its current pre-Australian Open spot on the calendar, New Zealand's lone stop, in 1996. It was named the WTA's Tournament Of The Year/APAC in 2014. Champs at the tournament - staged at the ASB Tennis Arena - include Marion Bartoli, Lindsay Davenport, Elena Dementieva, Jelena Jankovic, Agnieszka Radwanska, Ana Ivanovic and Venus Williams. Auckland, also known as the City of Sails, features black sand beaches, endless water activities and fantastic dining options. It is the largest and most populous urban region in New Zealand.

Williams had never lost a set in five previous meetings with Wozniacki, but that went out the window straight away, as the No.1-seeded Dane cruised through the opening frame in 31 minutes, 6-2. 
 She even broke in the opening game of the second set - but the No.3-seeded Williams just kept fighting, breaking back and eventually taking the second set, and finally the match too, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

 It was Williams' 46th WTA title, second among active players only to Serena Williams' 64. 
 "The first set went fast," Williams said after the match. "After that I was like, 'All right, time to take it to three.' 
But of course with her playing that well, I had to find a way just to get it to three.

WOZNIACKI ADVANCES TO FINAL IN AUCKLAND 2015

Wozniacki, the No.1 seed, was the first to advance and she was the one with the much tougher day, battling two hours and 35 minutes to edge No.4 seed Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. 

 Zahlavova Strycova's mix of offense and defense - big serves and frequent net rushing combined with consistency from the baseline - troubled Wozniacki from start to finish, and particularly at the start, as she built a 6-4, 2-0 lead. But the Dane found her rhythm just in time, winning 10 of the next 13 games to take the second set build a 4-2 lead in the third set, and she never really looked back again. "She's a tricky player to play because she doesn't give you much rhythm," Wozniacki said. "She comes to the net, she mixes the pace - I think she played really well today. For me it was about just staying in the match. I didn't start off too well, I didn't really feel the depth of the ball that I wanted to. 
But I started playing better as it went on, and I think she did too. I just had to kind of get going out there."

The No.1-seeded Wozniacki had to deal with Julia Goerges, who had won three of the pair's last four meetings, two of those wins coming in 2011 when Wozniacki was ranked No.1 in the world. And Goerges was serving bombs - she blasted seven aces during the match without a single double fault. But Wozniacki was just too solid on the return, dropping serve twice but more than making up for that with four breaks of her own, and the Dane eventually saw Goerges off in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
 "Maybe it wasn't the most comfortable match out there, but she's always given me a lot of trouble in the past, so I knew this wasn't going to be an easy one," Wozniacki said in her post-match presser. "I just kept fighting. I tried to be more consistent than her, and I think I managed to do that. Sometimes you need to know your strengths and your weaknesses. And I think I served well today as well. "She's got some big shots, so I'm just happy to be through to my first semifinals here."

WOZNIACKI ADVANCE IN AUCKLAND 2015

The feature night match saw No.1 seed Caroline Wozniacki hold off a late surge to close American wildcard Taylor Townsend out in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(4). 

After cruising through the opening set in just 23 minutes, Wozniacki had to fight back from 2-5 in the second set, even saving three set points serving at 4-5, before winning the 66-minute second set - and the match - on a tie-break. It was a dream finish too - Wozniacki saved her only ace of the match for match point.

Venus Williams won nine of the last 10 games to beat Kurumi Nara and reach the ASB Classic quarterfinals.

It looked like Nara was going to pose a threat early on as she twice came back from a break down and, after roughly half an hour, was leading 4-3. But the No.3-seeded Williams took it up several levels from there, reeling off nine of the next 10 games to run away with a 6-4, 6-1 victory in 65 minutes. 

 "Today was a different match than yesterday - not as straightforward," Williams, who dropped just one game in her first round match, said. "I was playing an opponent with more experience. She's very tenacious despite her size. She knows how to construct points, she plays great defense and can go on the offense as well, so it's a good match to have under my belt this early on in the season.
"Williams, who is coming off her first Top 20 season since 2010, is hoping for big things in 2015. 
 "I always had goals, but in life things never really work out the way you think they're going to," Williams said. "It's been that way my whole career - you say, 'I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna do that,' but sometimes you fall a little bit short, and sometimes you do more than you ever thought you could. 

WILLIAMS WIN, CEPELOVA OUT. ASB CLASSIC 2015.

The No.3-seeded Williams was the first of the pair to move through, blasting 10 aces and needing just 52 minutes to get a little bit of family revenge on Jana Cepelova, 6-1, 6-0. 

Cepelova had beaten Serena Williams at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston last year - this one was no contest though. This is Williams' second time playing the ASB Classic, going all the way to the final here a year ago before falling in three grueling sets to Ana Ivanovic. It would propel the American to her best season since 2010, winning the Dubai title and reaching another two finals in Montréal and Québec City. "I felt very welcome when I came back on the court today - it was like I picked up where I left off last year," Williams said afterwards. 
"The fans appreciate every point here. They're very appreciative of all the effort the players give. And that feels good when you don't hit the best shot out there! "But it went well for me today. 
To get to the final I'll have to play five days in a row, so I definitely don't want to play super long matches. It's much easier on me to play shorter matches like this."

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI ADVANCES INTO AUCKLAND 2015. ASB CLASSIC

Wozniacki, the No.1 seed, had a slightly tougher challenge in the feature evening match but still managed to move through relatively unscathed, outdoing Israeli qualifier Julia Glushko, 6-3, 6-2.

 "Maybe it wasn't the prettiest match, but I got through and I won it," Wozniacki commented. "The first match is always tough. I served well, but I want to keep playing better as the week goes on. "I love the crowd here, though. 
They made me feel very welcome. I love everybody here." This is Wozniacki's second time playing the ASB Classic too - she was a quarterfinalist in 2009 - and during a pre-tournament shopping trip the Dane talked about how glad she is to be back here. 

 "I love it here," Wozniacki commented. "I haven't been back to Auckland for many years, but it's such a great place to start the season, and I'm excited to play and get the 2015 season going here."
