SHENZHEN, China
Maria Sharapova is thrilled with the prospect of returning to competitive tennis at the Shenzhen Open but admits she is unlikely to be at her best.
The WTA World No.29 was forced to cut her 2018 campaign short in September in order to recover from a shoulder complaint but is fit again ahead of the new season.
She begins 2019 in China, where she reached the semifinals 12 months ago, but while she is aiming for even more this time around, she accepts that after a layoff it could take her some matches to find her rhythm.
“I’m really excited to be back and competing in a tournament,” she said prior to the competition, which begins on December 30.
