Beyonce and Jay-Z looking on from her player’s box, Serena Williams may have put on a less-than-stellar performance on tennis’s biggest covered stage, but she was more than good enough to defeat her overpowered and outmatched countrywoman Vania King, 6-3, 6-3.
Prior to the match, the 5-foot-5 King, 27, said she hoped to do better than she had in her previous meeting with Serena, also in the second round at the US Open, in 2014. That year she won just a single game. On Thursday night, the California native, ranked 87th in the world, acquitted herself about as well as could be expected, claiming a total of six games.
Serena began the match flawlessly, although midway through the first set, her shots began to misfire.
Williams served well, notching 13 aces, although other aspects of her game – her footwork, her return and occasionally her forehand – appeared to be a bit off. The top seed converted on just three of nine break-point opportunities and won just 44 percent of receiving points.
Serena was clearly not delighted by her play. “Hopefully I’ll be able to play better as the tournament goes on,” she declared after her win.
