Another example of tennis' continued growing popularity in Asia is the addition of a third event in China on the WTA calendar starting in 2013. The Shenzhen Longgang Gemdale Open will debut the first week of the season at the Longgang Tennis Centre, which features 32 courts, and a 4,000-seat Centre Court that uses Hawk-Eye.

Chinese superstar and former French Open champ Li Na is among those expected at the inaugural staging, along with former Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli and former World No.1 Jelena Jankovic.

Shenzhen is a major city in the south of Southern China's Guangdong Province just north of Hong Kong. Its modern cityscape is a result of a vibrant economy triggered by rapid foreign investment; it is considered southern mainland China's financial hub. In fact, it is home to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, of which Gemdale is listed on as a local property developer.
