Margarita Gasparyan outplayed Anastasia Potapova in an all-Russian contest to claim her second WTA title at the 2018 Tashkent Open.

The resurgent Margarita Gasparyan capped off her comeback week at the Tashkent Open in perfect style, outplaying qualifier Anastasia Potapova 6-1, 6-2 in an all-Russian contest to claim her second career WTA title.

Angelique Kerber got her US Open campaign underway, fighting past an in-form Margarita Gasparyan in two sets in her opening round match.

On a balmy day at the Louis Armstrong Stadium, Kerber had to recover from a break deficit in both sets to score the 7-6(5), 6-3 victory in an hour and 45 minutes.

Serena Williams dropped serve to start her fourth round encounter with rising Russian, margarita gasparyan, but only lost two more on Sunday, defeating the unseeded up and comer, 6-2, 6-1. Up next for the World No.1 and defending champion is a rematch of the 2015 australian open final against No.5 seed maría Sharapova.

"I played her in the first round of Wimbledon," Williams reminded stubbs during her on-court interview when asked whether she'd played Gasparyan before.

The American has played nearly flawless tennis this week in Melbourne after a tight opening round against camila giorgi; she lost serve just once all day and hit 19 winners to 15 errors, and winning 75% of first serve points.

"I knew going in that she likes to go for a lot; she's really hungry and a good player who's really aggressive, so I knew that I had to play really strong today."

Margarita Gasparyan and her gorgeous one-handed backhand won an all-WTA Rising Star final against Patricia Maria Tig to win the first WTA title of her career at the Baku Cup. 
 A day earlier, the two upstarts - Gasparyan unseeded, Tig a qualifier - took out the Top 2 seeds in the semifinals of the International event, Tig beating No.1 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Gasparyan No.2 seed Karin Knapp - and both of them brought their very best with the title on the line, too. Gasparyan came out stronger, breaking twice en route to taking the first set then getting another crucial break to serve for the match in the second set at 6-3, 5-4. 
Tig stormed back - she broke back at love and ended up stealing the set a few games later - but Gasparyan and that backhand bounced right back, storming through the third set to seal the two-hour-and-29-minute encounter, 6-3, 5-7, 6-0. 

 "It was an amazing atmosphere in the final today. I want to thank all the people who've supported me, like my hitting partner Misha, my doubles partner Alexandra and all of the organization here. "It's a very good tournament and I will always remember my week here."

Maria Kirilenko ha recibido la oportunidad de encabezar la campaña de su país en el primer desafío, enfrentando a Kimiki Date-Krumm en lo que será el primer choque entre las dos naciones en esta competencia.
La número 13 del mundo no tiene el mejor de los registros en Fed Cup, habiendo perdido los dos partidos en los que participó previamente. Sin embargo, ha estado en gran forma esta temporada, cayendo en sólo dos partidos y ganando su primer torneo del año en Pattaya. Kirilenko es una de la jugadoras que más avances ha logrado en el circuito en los dos últimos años, siendo reconocida hasta la temporada pasada como una especialista de dobles.
"Yo dejé de jugar dobles y decidí concentrarme en los singles", comentó Kirilenko. "Creo que fue una decisión lógica porque siento que estoy jugando bien  y pierdo mucha energía jugando dobles, así que quiero concentrar todos mis esfuerzos en intentar mejorar mi juego individual".
Enfrentando a Kirilenko el sábado estará la perenne Date-Krumm quien, a sus 42 años, es una de la jugadoras de más edad en figurar en la Fed Cup. La número dos japonesa ha estado jugando en la competencia desde que tenía 18 años, haciendo su debut en 1989 y sabe que su país no es favorito ante un fuerte equipo ruso. Sin embargo, ella sabe que cualquier cosa es posible en una competencia que es muy especial para ella:
“Recuerdo que en 1996 ante Alemania conseguimos ganar una serie milagrosamente. Steffi Graf estaba en el equipo y logramos ganar 3-2", dijo la veterana japonesa. "Yo era parte del equipo japonés y recuerdo ese triunfo. Estamos jugando contra Rusia que ha ganado la Fed Cup cuatro veces, así que sabemos que será muy duro pero los milgaros pueden suceder".
Makarova confiada
El segundo punto del sábado enfrentará a Ekaterina Makarova, en su segundo partido individual en esta competencia, ante Ayumi Morita. Este será el primer partido ente las dos, aunque la rusa ha tenido un gran arranque a la nueva temporada y está llena de confianza despué de entrar en el exclusivo grupo de las mejores 20 del mundo.
 la rusa de 24 años está consciente de la amenaza que representa Morita:
"Ella es una gran tenista y juega a gran velocidad y es agresiva. Intentaré estar en mi mejor nivel, aunque jugar en casa siempre hace que las cosas sean más fáciles. Nos hemos preparado bien para esta serie y estoy segura de que todo saldrá bien", señaló Makarova.
