Playing in her 1,000th career professional match, Venus Williams moved USA ahead 1-0 in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas first-round tie against the Netherlands on Saturday.
Williams won her 20th Fed Cup singles match with a 61 64 win over 124th-ranked Arantxa Rus in one hour and 21 minutes. Williams thanked the capacity crowd for their very vocal support during the encounter.
By winning her 20th Fed Cup rubber, Williams joins Billie Jean King, Chris Evert and Lindsay Davenport as being the only American women to win 20 or more Fed Cup singles matches.
A big-hitter ever since she made her debut on the tour more than 23 years ago, Williams raced through the first set against the left-handed Dutchwoman, but had a struggle to get through the second set. The first five games all ended in service breaks before Williams saved a break point in the sixth game to hold serve for the first time in the second set.
