Kvitova and Barbora Strycova gave the Czechs the perfect start to their Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round tie with Switzerland in Prague with the hosts up 2-0 at the end of Day 1.
In her first Fed Cup tie since being injured in a knife attack at her home in December 2016, Kvitova enjoyed a hard-fought 62 16 63 win over an inspired Viktorija Golubic before Strycova was too consistent for Belinda Bencic, winning 62 64 in the second rubber of the day.
With world No. 5 Karolina Pliskova waiting in the wings for a potential recall to the home side on Sunday, it’s hard to see anything other than a resounding Czech victory and a 10th successive World Group semifinal for Petr Pala’s all-conquering team.
