The credit for that, however, should largely go to Kristina Mladenovic, the French No. 1 who has been at serious odds with her game for the best part of the last six months, during which she inexplicably lost 15 consecutive matches.
After Belgium took a predictable 1-0 lead, thanks to a 62 61 win by the Australian Open semifinalist Elise Mertens against Pauline Parmentier, all the pressure was loaded upon Mladenovic’s strong, square shoulders.
Just a few weeks ago it might have been too much for the tall blonde of Yugoslav extraction, but with her confidence largely restored by a runner-up finish in the St Petersburg Open last week, she came through for her country with a robust 62 64 defeat of Belgium’s 32-year-old Kirsten Flipkens.
