Belinda Bencic she's the WTA Newcomer Of The 2015
After some phenomenal results in the juniors over the last few years, Belinda Bencic began 2014 with one goal - to make a name for herself in the big leagues.
Barely in the Top 200 when the year started, it seemed like a longshot, but oh what a year it was for the Swiss.
It didn't take long for the top players to take notice of her - after a hard-fought first round win over Kimiko Date-Krumm, Bencic took on Li Na in the second round of the Australian Open, dropping the first set at love in just 22 minutes but asserting herself in a big way in the 58-minute second set, coming within two points of taking the set in a tie-break but eventually falling to Li in straights, 6-0, 7-6(5).
"She played exactly like Martina Hingis," Li, who would go all the way to the title, said of Bencic. "She was using a lot of my power to move me around and make me run a lot out there on the court." That was just the beginning. As a No.140-ranked qualifier, Bencic would storm into the semifinals of the Premier-level clay court event in Charleston in April, breaking the Top 100 afterwards - the first player born in 1997 or later ever to break that elite.

which one will be WTA Player Of The Year? Vote now!
Serena Williams: With titles in Brisbane, Miami and Rome, it would be churlish to describe the first half of Williams' season as disappointing. Yet, while it was certainly no disaster, by her own high standards, failures at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon saw the World No.1 head to the hardcourts of North America eager to prove a point. And prove a point she did, willing herself back into form in July and August, before capping off this turnaround by waltzing to a sixth US Open. Williams then followed this up by overcoming a humbling round robin loss to Simona Halep to emerge victorious at the WTA Finals.
Maria Sharapova: Once again, it was Sharapova's clay court brilliance that characterized her season. After a slow start on her return from injury, the Russian finally got her hands on some silverware as the tour made its way to Europe, where she triumphed at three of the four events she contested on the dirt, culminating in a dramatic three set win over Simona Halep in the French Open final. Although she struggled to scale these heights again, Sharapova ended the year in style, derailing the in-form Petra Kvitova to lift the Beijing title and climbing back to No.2 in the rankings.

TEREZA SMITKOVA CONQUERS OPEN GDF SUEZ DE LIMOGES 2014
Tereza Smitkova, who burst into prominence with a spirited run to the second week of Wimbledon this year, has won the biggest title of her career, capturing the Open GDF SUEZ de Limoges, the last of five WTA 125K Series tournaments on the calendar in 2014.
Having already pulled off a few surprises during the week, most notably upending No.6 seed Alison Van Uytvanck in the second round and former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone in the semis, Smitkova saved another one for the final, beating No.9 seed Kristina Mladenovic for the title. It wasn't easy by any means - the first set lasted almost an hour, and she found herself down a double break at 4-1 in the second set - but Smitkova dug herself out of all of those holes, blasting 12 aces and finishing strong to close Mladenovic out in a close one in an hour and 40 minutes, 7-6(4), 7-5. This has been by far the best year of Smitkova's young career.
She finished 2013 at No.239 but has stormed the Top 100 this year, her greatest result coming at Wimbledon, making it all the way to the fourth round as a No.175-ranked qualifier, where she fell to eventual semifinalist Lucie Safarova.
Smitkova broke the Top 100 for the first time after that and now, after winning the biggest title of her career in Limoges, she's guaranteed to improve on her career-high of No.83.

VITALIA DIATCHENKO CONQUERS OF THE OEC TAIPEI WTA CHALLENGER TAIPE 2014
Vitalia Diatchenko put a stamp on an absolute breakthrough 2014 season on Sunday afternoon, winning the biggest title of her career at the OEC Taipei WTA Challenger.
Having just recorded the biggest result of her career a few weeks ago on home soil - she reached her first WTA quarterfinal at the Premier-level event in Moscow, scoring her first Top 50 win along the way against Dominika Cibulkova - Diatchenko conquered someone else's home soil this past week - Chan Yung-Jan's, to be exact - by winning the WTA 125K Series tournament in Taipei, Chinese Taipei.
The No.6-seeded Diatchenko outdid Chan, a wildcard into the draw, in a very tight three-setter in the final, rallying from a first set blowout and a 3-1 hole in the third set to prevail, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Before this, all of Diatchenko's career titles came on the ITF Women's Circuit, winning nine titles - the biggest of which coming at $100,000 tournaments in Astana, Kazakhstan, in 2011 and 2014.
The Czech Republic claimed its third Fed Cup title in four years
Petra Kvitova came through a thrilling encounter with Germany’s Angelique Kerber to win her second rubber of the 2014 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Final and earn Czech Republic its third title in four years.
The world No. 4 came through a gripping battle 76(5) 46 64 to end any hope of a German comeback and secure her nation its eighth overall title amid a raucous atmosphere in Prague – but it was a heroic effort from Kerber. The German had struggled to hold both nerve and serve during Saturday’s second singles rubber, squandering the advantage of a break over Lucie Safarova in each set, but she returned on Sunday determined to handle herself better under pressure.
So it proved, and though Kvitova made a comfortable start, holding to love in the opening game before bringing up three break point opportunities on Kerber’s serve, the world No. 10 dug her heels in to see off the early danger. Kerber’s occasional frailties on serve remained painfully apparent.
A couple of double faults in her first two service games were lessened in significance only by the same number by Kvitova - not to mention the Czech’s 11 unforced errors - and it was the German who struck the incisive first blow. Perhaps still ruing her missed opportunity on Kerber’s opening serve, Kvitova flung a backhand long on Kerber’s first break point to hand the travelling contingent the glimmer of hope they needed.

Fed Cup Final 2014: Czech Republic 2; Germany 0.
Czech Republic are in a commanding position to win a third Fed Cup by BNP Paribas title in four years after Petra Kvitova and Lucie Safarova both won in straight sets to put the hosts 2-0 up against Germany at the O2 Arena in Prague.
Kvitova had earlier shrugged off the pressure of expectation to hand the Czechs the ideal start to the Final by overpowering Andrea Petkovic 62 64, and Safarova capped a perfect day in front of a sell-out crowd of 13,000 with a 64 64 victory over German No. 1 Angelique Kerber.
No nation has ever came back from 2-0 down to win a Fed Cup final and Wimbledon champion Kvitova now has the chance to seal victory in the third rubber on Sunday when she is due to take on Kerber.
“I couldn’t have asked for more,” said Czech Republic captain Petr Pala. “Straight sets twice, great performance, I am very happy about the way the girls played. I think they were better on the court and they really went for it.
“We still have one more point to put under our belt and it's always the hardest one. It's never easy to win the last match. Germany are a very strong team, many great players in the team so we have to be ready for tomorrow.”
