Annika beck battled back from a set down to oust eugenie Bouchard from the bnp Paribas open  3-6, 6-2, 6-2 and book a second-round clash with kristina Mladenovic.
"It was a really difficult match, but I've played her twice in the past so I knew what to expect," Beck told WTA Insider after the match. "She's had solid results this year so she had a lot of confidence going into it. I knew first rounds are never easy."

Playing her first match on Indian Wells' massive Stadium 1, Beck got off to a strong start and broke early for a 3-0 lead. Bouchard's usually powerful, big-hitting game was littered with unforced errors, which Beck took full advantage of; in the opening two games Beck had hit just one winner, but found herself up 3-0.
It didn't last long, though - Bouchard righted the ship and kept Beck under pressure, reeling off five games in a row to claim the first set.

 Injuries and inconsistencies have conspired to erode former World No.7 Belinda bencic 's ranking, but the Swiss teeanger looked back in form on Wednesday at the bnp Paribas open  dismissing Tsvetana pironkova, 6-4, 6-1, to reach the second round.
"I started really nervous and didn't have a great start," she said during her on-court interview. "But then I started to pick up and remember what I had to do. That went well; I tried to stay focused throughout the match."

A pair of 23-year-olds with tons of potential will look to kick their 2017 campaigns into high gear on Thursday when eugenie Bouchard and Annika beck  meet for the third time. Bouchard started the year promisingly by reaching the semifinals at Sydney, but she has not won since falling in a tight three-setter in the third round of the Australian open  to coco vandeweghe.
Bouchard has been solid in all of her main draw appearances at Indian Wells, and owns a 6-3 record at this event. Is it time for some of the hard work that Bouchard has done under coach Thomas Hogstedt to pay off this week?
Meanwhile 2017 has been a struggle for Beck, whose ranking peaked at a career-high of 37 last July. She lost her first three matches of the season and only owns one Top 50 win. Beck has only been past the second round once at Indian Wells, and has lost three of her last four here.

Serena Williams announced her withdrawal from both the BNP Paribas Open and Miami Open due to a left knee injury.

Serena Williams has been forced to withdraw from the bnp Paribas open 2017  and Miami open, citing a left knee injury.

A two-time champion in Indian Wells and a eight-time winner in Miami, Williams has not played since winning a record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title in Melbourne.

"Sadly, I have to withdraw from the bnp Paribas open  in Indian Wells and the Miami Open," Serena said in a statement. "I have not been able to train due to my knees and am disappointed I cannot be there. I will keep moving forward and continue to be positive. I look forward to being back as soon as I can."

World No. 1 and two-time BNP Paribas Open champion Serena Williams leads the charge in Indian Wells on the women’s side after the singles draw was made on Monday afternoon. 

Second-seeded Angelique Kerber has a shot at re-taking the No. 1 from Serena over the next two weeks, but there is plenty of tennis to be played before that can happen.

World No. 3 Karolina Pliskova was put on the top half of the draw with Williams, while Kerber is joined by No. 4 and 2015 Indian Wells champ Simona Halep.

Two-time BNP Paribas Open champion Daniela Hantuchova and 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone are set to compete in the women's qualifying event, which features a challenging field of 48.

Live tennis gets underway Monday at 11am local time at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, with the women’s singles qualifying draw officially kicking off the 2017 BNP Paribas Open.

Former world No. 14 Peng Shuai of China is the top seed, the one-time U.S. Open semifinalist coming back from injury. Germany's Carina Witthoeft, ranked No. 69, is seeded second.

Players have to win two qualifying matches to earn one of 12 spots open in the WTA draw. The draw ceremony will be Monday at 3pm at the revamped Stadium Plaza. Admission all day to the Tennis Garden is free for fans, who can also take in practice sessions of the tournament’s biggest stars.

The men’s qualifying event will begin on Tuesday.

Two-time BNP Paribas Open champion Daniela Hantuchova received a wild card into qualifying, which also features 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy. Maria Sanchez, a former USC Trojan who was the No. 1-ranked NCAA player in college tennis, earned a wild card into qualifying by winning the BNP Paribas Challenge on Saturday.

The loquacious Ashleigh Barty  was uncharacteristically short of words after winning her first singles title at the ALYA Malaysian Open.
After dropping only one set as she came through qualifying to win the final in Kuala Lumpur, the Australian has had a bright start to 2017 - all the more remarkable considering that she took a year out to play cricket in the Women's Big Bash League for Brisbane Heat.
"I think it's been a success for us, the start [of 2017], more successful than we thought," she said after the match. "It's a tribute to all the work we did in the offseason, and last year, coming back. It hasn't quite been 12 months since I started playing singles again. I'm certainly happy to be back."

"I'm really happy to start the season like this: I had the semifinal in Hobart international  and now this title here in Acapulco," Tsurenko said after the match.
"It's three of three now, it's a 100% result for me and this makes me very happy," she added, referencing her perfect success rate in WTA finals. "I'm very happy with this result, and to win the title here it's just amazing."

Kristina Mladenovic  is through to her second final of the year at the abierto mexicano telcel after withstanding a tough challenge from christina mcHale.
Mladenovic is set to battle for another title after her 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 victory over the American.
"It's a very tough tournament, great players and every single round is difficult - everyone wants to win and stay as long as possible in this beautiful place Acapulco," Mladenovic said after the match.
"I've been fighting through all matches, and conditions are very difficult here because it's hot and humid, but I'm enjoying my time here in Acapulco and I'm excited to be in a final."

"I knew it was going to be a tough match going in; she's got a lot of power," she said after the match. "I was just trying to defend well because she's really tough when she's in control of the points.
"I think I served well today, which helped a lot."

Kristina Mladenovic suffered no letdown after her three hour thriller against Heather Watson, dispatching Belgium's Flipkens, 6-4, 6-3, to reach the final four at the abierto mexicano telcel.
"I'm very happy," the French star said after the match. "I had great sensations when I woke up this morning; I was very satisfied with my effort last night because the work is paying off for me to win a three and a half hour battle and wake up pretty fine. My physio did a good job as well.

"Today I felt a lot better on court than I did yesterday," Puig said after the match. "I've definitely seen an improvement in my game during the past few days.
"And that's really my goal, to improve every match and not feel pressure, and just go out on court and play the best I can."
