 Madison Keys of the United States had a breakthrough triumph at the Volvo Car Open on Sunday, winning the Premier-level clay-court event for the first time after a 7-6(5), 6-3 final-round victory over No.5 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.

Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark continued to improve her excellent record at the Volvo Car Open on Saturday with a 6-3, 6-4 semifinal win over No.16 Petra Martic, advancing to the championship match in Charleston for the third time in her career.

"I think I served well in most of the match and I think I returned really well most of the match as well, and I just tried to stay aggressive as much as I could and tried to make [Martic] run and make her move," Wozniacki told the press, after her win. "I think I did well today."

 But Keys flipped the script against Stephens in Charleston on Friday, edging through a tight first set tiebreak and claiming the victory, 7-6(8), 4-6, 6-2 after two hours and 14 minutes.

“I think a lot of the previous encounters I had been trying to do too much,” Keys told press after the match. “[I was] just trusting that I can stay in points and I can stay in rallies. And I don’t have to rush and try to hit a winner off the first ball. I think that was the biggest part from today.”

 Top seed Sloane Stephens tapped into her grit in the Round of 16 at the Volvo Car Open, engineering a propulsive comeback to defeat Ajla Tomljanovic, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the Round of 16.

Stephens found herself trying to fight out of a deficit in all three sets, coming back from a set and 0-3 to force a third set, and then again coming back from a break down at 3-4 to win the last three games of the match. A Charleston champion in 2016, the win put the American into her first quarterfinal of the season.

 lot has changed in the three years since Madison Keys last made the Volvo Car Open final in 2015. But one thing has stayed the same: She still plays ball-bashing, power-laden tennis.

On Saturday Keys, the 23-year-old American, looks to make her second final here in four years, set to play the equally-powerful Kiki Bertens in one of two of Saturday’s semifinals.

It’s the second of two singles semis set, following No. 5 seed Julia Goerges’ battle with crafty all-courter Anastasija Sevastova, set to start at 1pm.

Both doubles semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, as well as the Invesco Legends Charleston men’s event in the evening session, featuring Andy Roddick and more.
