SERENA WILLIAMS WIN. ZVONAREVA OUT. PRESS CONFERENCE. AUSTRALIAN OPEN 20154
Q. Things really clicked halfway through?
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, things really clicked. I had no other option but for things to click. Yeah, I just had to start playing better.
Q. How important is luck of the draw for you, even as No. 1 seed? You can get somebody who hasn't done much in their career for the first few rounds and get somebody like her.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, I mean, it depends. That's one thing about the Grand Slams. You have to be ready for anyone at any stage. Playing Vera is like, I had to get my mind like, Serena, this girl has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the world, she's been on the tour and she's a very quality player, she knows what to do. She knows how to win. I had to kind of snap into that.
Q. When you look at your sister at this point in her career, what do you see from her?
SERENA WILLIAMS: She is really motivating. She is playing so well, she's doing so good right now. Yeah, it's like makes me look behind my shoulders and like I have to play better and I want to do better. I always want to be able to stay ahead as much as I can. So I think that's been, for our whole careers, we've kind of motivated each other. We hopefully continue to do that.
Q. She also seems just really happy.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah.
Q. And in a good place.
SERENA WILLIAMS: She's in a good place. She talks about how she feels and like, Wow, it was a good match today. She's like, Yeah, if I win it'll be great. If not, I'm not going to worry about it. I think that's a great attitude because it takes a lot of pressure off of you. She's done so much in her career. She doesn't have to win another match. The same thing for me. As long as we can kind of look at it that way, then we both will do really well.
Q. When she came in and things were pretty intense; wasn't easy to have success on the tour. She's gone through all these different phases. Talk about how she's grown from basically a girl to an incredibly mature woman.
SERENA WILLIAMS: Yeah, she came in as a new face, a black woman that was shaking up the world. She had all the pressure on her shoulders. I kind of came in behind her. You know, just snuck in there. There was no pressure on me at all. She dealt with it so amazing. She had a lot of confidence and she had so much class and still does throughout everything. You can see that her personality is pretty much the same. She's definitely grown but she's always been very mature and very regal.

The All-England Club has awarded Martina Hingis and Vera Zvonareva a wildcard for Wimbledon doubles competition 2014.
Martina Hingis will appear at Wimbledon for the first time in seven years after receiving a wildcard into the doubles draw. The 33-year-old, who will partner
Vera Zvonareva, was among the initial wave of wildcards unveiled by the All-England Club on Wednesday. In addition to her singles victory in 1997, Hingis is also a two-time doubles champion at Wimbledon, winning with Helena Sukova in 1996 and Jana Novotna in 1998.
Aside from the odd outing in the invitational events, Hingis' last appearance at the All-England Club was third round defeat to Laura Granville, in 2007. Last summer, Hingis returned to the tour, partnering Daniela Hantuchova for the US hardcourt season, and this March captured her first title since 2007, when she triumphed alongside Sabine Lisicki in Miami.

Vera Zvonareva return Top Ten in 2014?
Will Vera Zvonareva be able to return to anywhere close to her previous form prior to her injury? This is the question that is asked when her name is mentioned. Vera Zvonareva was one of the best tennis players in the world as recently as 2011 when she was ranked seventh in the world. However, in 2012 this Russian star was beset by both injury and illnesses for the first half of the Women’s Tennis season.
Her illness became so severe that she was forced to withdraw from the rest of her tournaments from July to the end of the season in November to recuperate.
In 2013 an injury to her right shoulder required surgery and she was forced to miss the entire year. If she is able to return by the beginning of January 2014 that will be almost 18 months without having played competitive tennis.
During her time away from the game Vera Zvonareva returned to school and earned her degree in International Economic Relations and she intends to continue her education while playing. Zvonareva has always been a talented player but she will be attempting to regain her playing form after 18 months away from the game. Most professional tennis players are unable to stay away a week from hitting a tennis ball and consider a month without tennis almost a punishment.
Vera Zvonareva has not hit a ball for over a year and a half and she has found something else that interests her. Successful professional athletes are usually tunnel vision individuals and when they start looking at different career options it is usually a sign that their career is winding down and they are preparing for their next career.

Vera Zvonareva will soon be thirty years old and has earned over $13 million over the course of her career. She will be starting from the bottom of standings in order to regain her ranking and that means she will encounter some of the toughest draws against women who have been working out during the time she has been unable to play. If Zvonareva decides to return to tennis she will have to rededicate herself completely to the game because she will literally be swimming upstream trying to compete against the younger players of today. Vera Zvonareva has a very difficult decision to make in 2014.
