The Russians best ranking to date is 69, but after beating Evgeniya Rodina, 6-2, 6-2, she has lept up 22 places and is within striking distance of that mark.

"I'm really happy," said Stephens, during her post-match press conference. "It's not downhill from here. But it's good to get through that first day. First round of a Grand Slam is super tough, especially as defending champion."

"I thought I was serving well, just playing well on her serve, which is always important," Pliskova said after the match. "I was just trying to be aggressive. I didn't know her game that much. We played once in the past.
"It was just my second appearance on this court, so it was a little bit new for me, as well. I just think I made it pretty well."
