Maria Sharapova has released a statement on social media responding to the decision not to award her a wildcard for the French Open

Maria Sharapova has released a statement on social media following yesterday's announcement from the Fédération Française de Tennis she will not receive a wildcard into the French Open.

"If this is what it takes to rise up again, then I am in it all the way, every day," she wrote. "No words, games, or actions will ever stop me from reaching my own dreams. And I have many."

Sharapova, 30, a two-time French Open champion, had hoped to receive a wildcard for Roland Garros following her return from suspension for a violation of anti-doping rules.

She has played WTA tournaments in Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome and was forced to retire through injury from her match against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the second round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia yesterday.

withstood an impressive charge from Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, one of the most consistent forces in 2017, to pull off a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 comeback victory over the No.17 seed to reach the second round at the Mutua Madrid Open.

The 2014 champion was playing just her second tournament of the season, and was made to fight from the start against Lucic-Baroni, an Australian Open semifinalist and Miami Open quarterfinalist in what has been her year on tour.

“I'm not quite sure how to describe the match because it feels like it happened so fast,” she said after the match. “I thought she played really well. I was playing against, like, a human slingshot for a while there. Balls were coming so fast and deep that, for a couple of sets, I don't believe we had too many rallies over three balls.

The Croatian’s extraordinary renaissance added another chapter at this year’s Australian Open on Wednesday when the comeback queen upset fifth seed Karolina Pliskova 6-4 3-6 6-4 at Rod Laver Arena.

It was her second major upset after taking down third seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the second round.

Lucic-Baroni had already deemed her run to this year’s Australian Open quarter-finals “so much better” than the run which took her to the Wimbledon semifinals in 1999, a run in which she defeated Monica Seles before falling to Steffi Graf.

This then is next level.

“I know this means a lot to every player to reach the semifinals but to me this is overwhelming. I will never ever, ever forget this day or the last couple of weeks,” Lucic-Baroni said.

“This has truly made my life and everything bad that happened, it has made it OK.

“Just the fact that I was this strong and that it was worth fighting for, it’s really incredible.”

Eighteen years on, she is back in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam after an impressive 6-4 6-2 victory over American qualifier Jennifer Brady at Melbourne Park on Monday.

For the 34-year-old, this is all the more sweeter, given her off-court family struggles which ruled her out of the game for years.

“So much better now. It's incredible now. I mean, back then it was kind of expected of me and it was normal,” Lucic-Baroni said.

“I won a lot as a junior. Then I won a lot as soon as I started playing pro. It was kind of normal. It was normal to win tournaments, normal to win big matches and go far. I mean, it was incredible, of course, but it was more normal.

“But now it's been so long, it's extra fun, it's extra special, for sure.”

Simona Halep has become the biggest casualty of the women's tournament, with the No.3 seed upset by Mirjana Lucic-Baroni on Wednesday in the second round at Roland-Garros. Halep, a finalist last year in Paris, had no answer to the Croatian's relentless attack, succumbing 7-5 6-1. 

 This was always going to be a danger match for the third seed; last year at Flushing Meadows, Lucic-Baroni beat Halep en route to the fourth round. And she proved that result was no fluke on Suzanne-Lenglen Court, belting 29 winners to Halep's five to seal victory. Next up for Lucic-Baroni is French No.1 Alize Cornet, who beat another Romanian, Alexandra Dulgheru, in straight sets.

Mirjana Lucic-Baroni kept her 2014 revival ‎going on Sunday afternoon, defeating Venus Williams in straight sets to win the Coupe Banque Nationale in Québec City - her first WTA title in 16 years and four months, a record for the biggest gap between winning WTA titles. 

 Coming in off a sensational run to the fourth round of the US Open, which included the best win of her career against the No.2-ranked player in the world, Simona Halep, Lucic-Baroni carried that momentum into Québec City this week, not dropping a set en route to her first WTA semifinal since Wimbledon in 1999, then going one step further by reaching her first WTA final since Bol, Croatia in 1998. And with some big serving and ferocious hitting off the ground Lucic-Baroni took it to an even higher level against the No.1-seeded Williams, falling behind 3-1 early on but then storming back to win in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, throwing her arms in the air in celebration after winning match point. "I'm so happy I can't really find the words right now to explain how happy I am," Lucic-Baroni said. "I played such a great match today against one of the best players in the world, such a champion. "It's been so long. I'm finally playing the great tennis I always knew I could play, but it had been so long that I kind of lost a little bit of the belief in myself. But now after starting with my new coach Julian Alonso, winning matches and really getting that belief back, I'm just so ready to keep going."
