Veronica Cepede Royd the 27-year-old from Paraguay, was one of the few players who was able to walk off the court with a smile despite some brutal heat that has hit Flushing Meadows on Day 1 of US Open Qualifying action.
Despite standing at 5-foot-4, Cepede Royg is a very powerful and explosive player. She uses her strong legs to her advantage, as she stays low on her ground strokes and gets a high contact point on her serve.
Currently ranked No. 154 in the world, Cepede Royg has competed in all four Grand Slam events. Her best result thus far has been at the 2017 French Open, where she reached the fourth round before falling to former No. 1 Karolina Pliskova. It is no coincidence there; Cepede Royg admits that her favorite and most comfortable surface is clay. Today, she had her hands full with Susanne Celik of Sweden.
