The 32 seeds for both the men’s and women’s singles draws were announced on Tuesday, as a full complement of the game’s top players descends on New York for the 2018 US Open. The seedings are based on the Aug. 20 edition of the ATP and WTA rankings.
Serena Williams, who missed last year’s tournament as she gave birth to her daughter, returns as the No. 17 seed. The six-time champion is the only player in either draw seeded above her ranking.
“After balancing a variety of factors, including her return to competition following the birth of her daughter, her recent hard-court performance this summer and recognition of her achievements at the US Open, the USTA has moved Serena Williams’ seeding nine spots, from 26 to 17," said Managing Director of Corporate Communications Chris Widmaier. "We feel this is the appropriate decision, one that recognizes Serena and is fair to the remaining seeded players.”
At No. 17, Williams will be in line to face a Top 16 opponent in the third round, should the seeds hold.
