"The match was on a really high level at the end of the second set. We run a lot, both of us. I think we both have a great return, so I think that was also the key from both of us to breaking back," Kerber said. "She breaks me back, and then I break her back.

She drew first blood against the Italian in the fourth game, targeting Italian's backhand and taking advantage of the short balls to draw a spate of errors before a volley into the net gave her the break. An untimely double fault in the next game handed Vinci the break right back, but Wozniacki wrestled the decisive break in reply for a 4-2 lead. She needed three set points but served out the opening set, 6-3.

Wozniacki was more straightforward in the second, bracketing the set with a break in the first and penultimate games, saving three set points in the fifth game to close out the match.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has reduced Maria Sharapova's suspension after testing positive for meldonium to 15 months. 

Sharapova appealed the initial two-year suspension handed out by the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme in July, and will now be able to return to the court on April 26, 2017.

A combined ATP-WTA event, the China Open is the biggest tournament on the Asian leg of the WTA calendar and the fourth and last Premier Mandatory stop of the season.

The tournament, which launched as a Tier II event in 2004 and was upgraded to Premier status in 2009, is staged in Beijing Olympic Park at the China National Tennis Center. The facility - constructed for the 2008 Summer Olympics - expanded to 11 courts featuring a new 15,000-seat stadium with a retractable roof in 2011. It utilizes space-age air-cooling technology. Sixty-three minutes was all it took for Petra kvitova  to end her 13-month title drought, overpowering dominika cibulkova 6-1, 6-1, to win the DONGFENG MOTOR WUHAN OPEN 2016.

Kvitova produced the latest in a series of brilliant performances in Wuhan, piercing Cibulkova's defenses at will to romp home, 6-1, 6-1, and recapture the trophy she also won in 2014.

"Wuhan, it's really one of my favorite cities. It was a great crowd all well, there were some incredible matches for me and I'm really happy that I can stand here as a champion again," Kvitova said.

In the opening game, Kvitova set out her stall, firing down a sequence of perfectly placed deliveries to hold serve with barely a minute on the clock. She would finish with nine aces, but the rest of her game was equally impressive. In the next game, a brilliant stretching backhand pass helped her to a break to love.

Despite starting the week in seventh place on the road to Singapore  Mattek-Sands and Safarova's seventh title together saw them become the fourth team to secure a spot at the season-ending showpiece.

"Singapore last year was awesome. It's the year-end championships, the best of the best. Only the best teams get to go, so I think it's an honor to make it there in the end," Mattek-Sands said. "I think everyone at this point is fighting for a spot because the rankings were pretty close."

It is testament to the American-Czech's partnership that they have managed to secure their place in Singapore from so few appearance; injuries and scheduling conflicts have restricted them to just seven tournaments together this year. However, when they have been on court, it has not taken long to rekindle the magic.
