Azarenka conquer's Indian Wells 2016
INDIAN WELLS, CA, USA
Victoria azarenka continued her near-perfect start to 2016 by showing vintage form against an out of sorts World No.1 Serena Williams to win the bnp Paribas open final, 6-4, 6-4, and return to the Top 10.
Playing in her first Indian Wells final since 2001, the top seed hadn't dropped a set through her first five matches but struggled throughout the nearly 90-minute match, converting just one of 10 break point opportunities and striking 33 unforced errors.
Azarenka, by contrast, won 86% of her first serve points, and held off an impressive fightback from the 21-time Grand Slam champion - who won four games in a row with two chances to level the second set from 1-5 down - to win her second Indian Wells title, and first Premier Mandatory event since the 2012 China Open
A gracious Serena fought back tears during her runner-up speech.
"It was really hard the last moment I had here wasn't the greatest, so thank you so much," she said, addressing the crowd.
"Thank you so much for the cheers; I can't tell you how much it means to me. I can't even begin to tell you!
"I'm just so happy to be able to stand here again."

Sunday's match is a place Victoria Azarenka has been working tirelessly to return to. For her opponent, No. 1 Serena Williams, it's a spot she thought she would never return to.
Azarenka, a former No. 1, takes on the current No. 1 Williams when they meet in the BNP Paribas Open championship match.
By returning to Indian Wells final, Williams becomes the first American to reach this stage since 2005 (Davenport). Williams is also the last American to win the title, when she captured her second Indian Wells crown in 2001.
By the numbers
Following her last title, Williams did not play the event for 14 years, until last year, when she reached the semifinals before withdrawing with a leg injury. Returning to the finals had a surreal feeling for Williams.
"[I] definitely didn't think I would be in another final here ever," Williams said. "Then last year just really, really bad luck. I felt devastated that I wasn't in the final or at least even being able to play.

The No.6 seed misaki Doi claimed the second WTA-level title of her career with a win over anna lena Friedsan, 6-4, 6-2 in the final of the inaugural San Antonio Open.
"I'm so happy to win the first San Antonio Open," Doi said after the final. "Today it was very very difficult conditions - it was so windy. But I'm so happy."
The swirling wind gave both players plenty of trouble throughout the match, and neither was able to play herself into a rhythm. Despite the tough conditions, Doi found her footing first and grabbed the first break at 4-3 before going on to take the first set.
Doi and Friedsam traded holds in the second set, but the No.6 seed had the momentum at her back and she reeled off four straight games to go up 5-1. The lead would prove to be too much for Friedsam to overcome, and Doi captured the win in one hour and 14 minutes.
"I think I just tried to focus on every ball," Doi said of overcoming the high winds. "Since the conditions were so tough, I just focus on one point, one point, one point."

Karolina Pliskova put an end to daria kasatkina breakthrough run at the bnp Paribas a in a one-sided quarterfinal on Thursday afternoon.
Kasatkina has been one of the fortnight's feel-good stories, but her previous exertions finally caught up with her as Pliskova ran out a 6-3. 6-2 winner in little over an hour.

Two longtime rivals will get reacquainted on Stadium 1 on Tuesday as Petra Kvitova and agnieszka radwanska will meet for the tenth time with a spot in the bnp Paribas open semifinals on the line. Of their ten meetings, nine have come on a hardcourt, but here at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Radwanska seems to have done a better job at adapting to the tricky playing conditions. She's reached the quarterfinals six times - amassing a 27-9 career record at the event - but the Pole isn't satisfied with those numbers whatsoever. "Definitely I want to do better than the quarters, obviously," the 2014 runner-up said. "The goal is always to win."
As far as facing Kvitova's dangerous first-strike tactics and booming ground game, Radwanska knows she will have to have her feet moving from the get-go. "I just hope I can really play my good tennis against her, because otherwise I will be in big trouble," she said. "But I think always against her you really have to play good tennis and be careful, definitely on her serve."

Top seed Serena Williams endured a few frustrating moments against a resurgent kateryna bondarenko, easing past the qualifier, 6-2, 6-2 at the bnp Paribas open.
Bondarenko came back to tennis just over 18 months ago after giving birth to a daughter, but has been playing some of the best tennis of either of her two careers in 2016, reaching the australian open third round as she slowly creeps back to her former career-high of No.29.
"It definitely wasn't an easy match," Williams told Andrew Krasny during her on-court interview. "She's obviously been a good player in the past, and she knows how to play on big courts against big players. So, it was a good match for me."
In complete control through the first six games, the American lost serve a game from the opening set, and battled through windy conditions and some evident angst through the 72 minute match. In the end, she hit 26 impressive winners to only 22 errors, while Bondarenko hit 13 winners to 21 unforced.

In a year that has been characterized by its unpredictability on the WTA Tour, Radwanska has been one of the steadier performers, making at least the semifinals in all three events she has played. Will she make it four in a row? Radwanska certainly owns the upper hand in her head-to-head with 2010 bnp Paribas open champion Jelena jancovic. The Serb took their first two meetings but since then Radwanska has won six of seven. The 2014 runner-up eased past Mónica niculescu in straight sets on Sunday and told reporters she's yearning for the bnp Paribas open title after the match. "Of course I was here in the final and really close to hold the trophy," Radwanska said. "So this is another year to try. Obviously I am really trying every year to get the title. I really want to have that trophy at my home." To reach the quarterfinals, Radwanska will have to maintain the hot hand against a hot opponent. San Diego resident and self-proclaimed California girl Jankovic comes in on a roll, having dropped just five games in her two rounds thus far.

World No.1 Serena Wiliams showed signs of nerves and rust early in her third round match with Yulia putintseva, but by the time it was over she looked like a player who was dead set on winning this title for the first time in 15 years. Still, Williams would like to rid herself of the slow starts that have created problems for her over the last few years. "I know last year I had a lot of slow starts, but I feel like I have done better this year," Williams told the media on Sunday. "I had a slow start in this one, too, but it's getting better. It just goes to show there is always something I can improve on. I'm always looking to improve on things." On Tuesday she'll look to improve her career record at Indian Wells to 21-1 when she meets qualifier katerima bondarenko. The Ukranian reached the round of 16 for the first time at Indian Wells by surviving a third set tie-break with lesia tsurenko. Williams has won their two previous meetings, both in straight sets.

2017 WTA calendar.

The WTA announced today its calendar for the 2017 season as well as a recent addition to the 2016 calendar.
The 2017 WTA season is comprised of 23 WTA Premier and 33 International events, with all roads leading to the season finale bnp Paribas WTA finals Singapore followed by the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai. Beginning in 2017, WTA Media, together with WTA tournaments, will produce all main draw singles matches and the semifinals and finals of all doubles matches.
"The 2017 season promises to be the WTA's most exciting year to date, building on the existing cornerstones of the women's tour, said WTA CEO Steve Simon. "With more fans than ever accessing our sport to watch an unprecedented depth of player field, the WTA promises another intense race on the Road to Singapore in 2017," Simon added.
Changes and additions to the 2017 calendar:
• St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy (Russia) and Taiwan Open (Kaohsiung): switch to week 5 (from week 6), beginning January 30
• Qatar Total Open (Doha): Premier event, switch to week 7 (from week 8), beginning February 13
• Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships: Premier 5 event, switches to week 8 (from week 7), beginning February 20
• Rio Open (Brazil): switches to week 8 (from week 7), beginning February 20.

After an even start, Pliskova's game clicked into gear in spectacular fashion, reeling off 10 straight games to close out a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
Pliskova had won all three of her previous encounters with Ivanovic, including earlier this year in Sydney.
"We've played a few times already and I've always won. But I think I played really good tennis today and I'm happy that I made [the next round] so fast," Pliskova said.
The one-sided scoreline was all the more surprising given the players' respective form heading into the tournament; Ivanovic had made the semi and quarterfinals in St. Petersburg and Dubai, while Pliskova had suffered a couple of early exits in the Middle East.
Ivanovic, though, came into the contest nursing a knee injury that hampered her movement, leaving her powerless as Pliskova powered 18 winners in their brief time on court.
"Last year I didn't lose any first rounds. Now I'd lost twice in a row so I'm just happy to have some matches and looking forward to the next one," Pliskova added.

After her second-round victory over siegemund of Germany, Williams admitted that she's a lot less nervous than she was last year, when she ended her boycott and played in the desert for the first time since 2001. "I was really kind of stressed out last year," Williams told reporters. "It was a lot of emotions last year. This year it was a lot easier. I mean, obviously there is still something there, but it's a lot easier to just deal with everything." A more relaxed Williams could spell big trouble for Yulia putintseva but don't expect the 21-year-old to lay down and play dead. She's as fiery as they come and she'll come out ready to take her shots at the World No.1.
Ana Ivanovic advances to third round of the BNP Paribas open 2016
In the final match of the day, No. 14 seed Ana Ivanovic outlasted a hard-hitting Camila Giorgi 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(5), saving two match points while serving to stay in the contest in the 10th game of the deciding set. The 2008 champion will meet Karolina Pliskova next.
Bouchard in third round of the bnp Paribas open 2016
Canada's Eugenie Bouchard advanced to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday, while seeded players Garbine Muguruza and Caroline Wozniacki were among those who made exits on Day 4 of play.
The 22-year-old Bouchard met American Sloane Stephens, also 22, for the first time since 2013. In their second-round battle, Bouchard won 63 per cent of first-serve points and broke Stephens six times. She dropped her serve four times in the encounter lasting one hour and 41 minutes.
“We had some great points, really both going at it, and I was just, I think, a bit more aggressive,” said the Montreal native. “I think that made the difference.”
Bouchard, who has reached two finals (Kuala Lumpur, Hobart) so far this season, meets Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky in the third round.
