Petra kvitova win's over caroline wozniacki into río 2016

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil
Petra kvitova  strode purposefully past former caroline wozniacki  and into the third round of the Olympic Games on Monday.

A match that had been billed as a potential banana skin for Kvitova turned out to be remarkably straightforward as she closed out a 6-2, 6-4 win in an hour and 38 minutes.

Kvitova's only slight wobble came when serving for the match, a couple of wild errors helping Wozniacki pull back one of the breaks. However, there were no nerves at the second time of asking, a love hold seeing her book the first spot in the last 16.

It's been a somewhat quiet season for Australia's Daria Gavrilova. Since last year's breakthrough, she's succumbed to a string of first and second losses, results at odds with the 22-year-old's big game and even bigger promise. But despite the early exits, Gavrilova's reputation as a giant-killer remains intact - she owns four wins over Top 20 players so far, including victories over Petra Kvitova and halep.

She'll have to bring every ounce of her dogged belief and determination against what would be the biggest opponent of all: World No.1 Serena Williams.

Friday saw the curtain raised on the XXXI Olympiad with a colorful opening ceremony at the magnificent Maracana stadium.

Broadcast to an audience of over three billion, it celebrated Brazil's culture, history and nature, before former marathon runner Vanderlei de Lima lit the Olympic cauldron. The WTA was well represented on the night, with caroline wozniacki carrying in the flag for Denmark.

The WTA returned to Brazil for the first time in over a decade with the inaugural Brasil Tennis Cup in Florianopolis in 2013.

"The transport, the food, the hotel - it was all fantastic," said inaugural champion Monica Niculescu. "It was also near the mall and the beach is beautiful too. I had all I needed in Florianopolis this week - everything was perfect."

Previously the host of ITF Women's Circuit events, Florianopolis is the hometown of ATP legend Gustavo Kuerten. It is the capital city and second largest city of the Santa Catarina state in southern Brazil.

Known for having a very high quality of life, Florianopolis' economy is heavily based on information technology, tourism and services. It is also a surfing mecca, as the island is considered to have the best and most consistent waves in the country.

Other WTA tournaments in Brazil over the years have been held in Bahia, Curitiba, Guaruja and São Paulo. Rio de Janeiro was added to that list in 2014.

The Jiangxi Open is an International event staged at the Nanchang International Sports Center.

The tournament which is the largest international tennis tournament in Jiangxi province, boasts a total prize pot of $226,750, with the winner walking away with 280 ranking points.

Simona halep  won her third title of 2016 with a decisive 7-6(2), 6-3 victory at the Rogers cup over No.10 seed  keys moving up to No.3 in the world and increasing her winning streak to 10 straight matches.

"It was not my best tennis because I couldn't play my best tennis," Halep said in her post-win press conference. "She was hitting very strong. As anyone knows, I cannot hit stronger than her because she's very strong and it's impossible for my height and for my body.

"I tried just to put the ball away from her, just to make her run. I think I did it pretty well, and she'd missed. It was really tough for me to make winners today because her ball was coming too hard.

"I'm tired," she said with a smile.
