An ITF tournament from 1993 to 1997, what is now known as the Claro Open Colsanitas was upgraded to a WTA-level event in 1998. Since then, the tournament at the Club Campestre El Rancho in Bogotá has evolved into one of the most prestigious sporting events in all of Latin America.

Bogotá resident Fabiola Zuluaga captured four of her five career singles titles at this event - a tournament record. Argentina's Paola Suárez has the most doubles titles here with four.

Colombia's largest city and capital, Bogotá features internationally recognized universities and libraries. "The Athens of South America" is also home to regional offices for many companies.

Sloane Stephens took a third title of 2016 at the Volvo Car Open

 Sloane Stephens was a point from a one-set deficit against 2011 Volvo Car Open finalist elena vesnina, but the young American turned the tide in emphatic style, capturing her third title of the season, 7-6(4), 6-2.

Stephens had lost her only prior encounter with Vesnina back in 2013, but appeared to have weathered the storm after falling behind an early break to take a 5-2 lead in the opening set. Vesnina had to win two matches in qualifying just to reach the main draw, however, and was far from finished as she clawed back to win four games in a row and even hold set point behind a barrage of winners.

Cibulkova captured her first WTA final since 2014 at the Katowice, taking out three-time finalist camila giorgi, 6-4, 6-0.

Giorgi had reached her third straight Katowice final, but her hopes of a first title in Poland took an immediate hit as Cibulkova raced out to a 4-0 lead. The 2014 australian open finalist served for the opening set at 5-2 when Giorgi's signature firepower briefly lit up the stadium, nabbing one of the two breaks back and holding break points to level the contest at five games apiece.

Cibulkova was in her second final of 2016.

"Thank you for coming and supporting me all week," Giorgi said in her runner-up speech. "It was really nice to be here this year again, and I hope to come back next year."

Stephens is into her first WTA singles final on clay after the defending champion kerber saw herself forced to retire, 6-1, 3-0, in the semifinals of the Volvo Car Open.

"It's been a little tough out here but I'm happy to be through to the final," Stephens said. "It's sad that it had to be that way. It's not the way I'd wanted it.

"I wish Angie a speedy recovery - she's a really nice girl and a really great player."

Stephens, who already has two titles in 2016 with wins at Auckland and Acapulco, took the first set after a dominating 24 minutes, outhitting a sluggish Kerber. The American scored 10 winners and hit just two unforced errors, while the out-of-sorts Kerber hit just seven winners to 10 unforced errors.

Venus williams advanced in Charleston 2016

2004 Volvo Car Open champion venus williams made a thunderous return in Charleston, hitting 20 winners to ease past Alison riske, 6-4, 6-2.

"It wasn't easy," the former No.1 told Andrew Krasny during her on-court interview. "It was great tennis from both of us, an hour and a half of slam, bam, thank you m'am!

"I was really impressed with her; it was great to have Americans playing well."

The No.88 Czech put pressure on Watson right away, unleashing her powerful lefty serve and letting lose a couple of her record aces.
She went up 4-1, break serve twice and grabbing the first set off Watson. But before Pliskova could run away with it, Watson turned things around to take the second set.

Into a deciding set, Pliskova ran ahead to a 3-0 lead, breaking Watson's serve twice - Watson saved four break points in the third game alone but gave up the fourth on a mishit backhand. Watson grabbed a break back, but Pliskova's lead was too great to surmount and the Czech took the match 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

"I played well and Heather also played well too," Pliskova said. "So I was pleased to come through a tough third set."

The Family Circle Cup has a rich history on green clay that dates back to 1973, the year all of women's professional tennis was united in becoming the WTA. It is the largest women's-only tournament in the world, and Family Circle magazine is the longest running title sponsor in men's or women's pro tennis.

At its maiden staging in Hilton Head, South Carolina, the Family Circle Cup was the first women's tennis event to offer $100,000 in prize money and the first to be broadcast on network TV. It moved to Amelia Island, Florida, in 1975, back to Hilton Head in 1977 and settled in its current home of Charleston in 2001.

The Family Circle Cup's list of champions reads like a roster of all-time greats, with names such as Tracy Austin, Jennifer Capriati, four-time winner Steffi Graf, Justine Henin, Martina Hingis, Conchita Martínez, four-time champ Martina Navratilova, Gabriela Sabatini, Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, three-time titlist Serena Williams and Venus Williams. Chris Evert was the most dominant, collecting a tournament-record eight titles.

The Original 9, the nine players who signed $1 contracts with World Tennis publications publisher Gladys Heldman in 1970 to compete in what would become the Virginia Slims Series, reunited at the Family Circle Cup's 40th anniversary in April 2012. One of them, Billie Jean King, had the stadium court named after her.

Having recently hosted events in Sopot and Warsaw, Poland saw WTA tennis return to its grounds in 2013 with what is now known as the Katowice Open. Initially held on indoor clay, the tournament switched to indoor hardcourts in 2014.

The capital of the Silesia region, Katowice is one of the biggest urban and industrial areas in Poland. No stranger to hosting major sporting events, the city has also welcomed the FIBA European Basketball Championships for men and women and the FIVB Volleyball World League Final. The BNP Paribas Katowice Open is held at Spodek Hall, one of the most recognized sports facilities in Poland.

Azarenka continues her climb back to the top, overpowering kuznetsova  6-3, 6-2 in the final to claim the Miami open  title and secure her return to the WTA Top 5.

Azarenka, a two-time champion here in Miami, won her third title of 2016 in dominating fashion without dropping a set. Even more impressive, her back-to-back titles in Indian Wells and Miami complete the Sunshine Double, a feat last achieved 11 years ago.

The on-form Belarusian, who has only lost one match all year, broke in Kuznetsova's opening service game and quickly held for a 2-0 lead. That lone hold of serve would turn out to be vital, as Azarenka was able to weather the seven consecutive breaks that followed and still hang on to the lead.

In the second set Azarenka's powerful game came together as she wore down Kuznetsova from the baseline, running the Russian all over the court.

An even rivalry revisited.
Azarenka and Kuznesova will lock horns for the first time since the 2013 Australan open Azarenka won on that occasion to level the rivalry at four wins apiece. She will start as most people's favorite on Saturday, but the WTA's form player is taking nothing for granted.

"She's a very talented and diverse player," Azarenka said when asked about Kuznetsova following her semifinal. "She is one of the players who knows how to handle big stages. I know she has her up and downs in her career, but she knows how to handle big stages. She is a two-time Grand Slam champion, so it speaks a lot."

Azarenka is looking to join rarefied company by lifting the title for a third time.
Azarenka has won Miami twice before, in 2009 and 2011. Should she emerge triumphant against Kuznetsova she will become just the fourth player to lift the Miami title three or more times, after Graf (1987, 1988, 1994, 1995, 1996), Venus Williams  (1998, 1999, 2001), and Serena Williams (2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015).
